SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - A trial for a Pacifica father accused of bringing a gun to his teenage son’s court appearance will begin today in South City.

Prosecutors say security guards at San Mateo Superior Court in Redwood City stopped 45-year-old Frank Turney on Sept. 19, 2007, after discovering a gun in his possession. On Monday, he elected to face a court trial in front of San Mateo Superior Court Judge Elizabeth Lee.

“His defense is that he forgot he had it,” Chief Deputy District Attorney Steve Wagstaffe said. “Fortunately, in a case like this, we don’t need a motive.”

The parking-facility manager, who is free on $50,000 bail, faces up to three years in state prison for bringing a weapon into a government building.

Meanwhile, his 19-year-son, Johnny James Turney, appeared in court Monday to face restitution hearings on two recent convictions. On Feb. 21, the younger Turney was sentenced to two years in prison for felony assault and battery after allegedly smashing a beer bottle over the head of a witness in a stolen property case against him. He was also sentenced to a concurrent two years for allegedly punching a jail guard who was counseling him about ridiculing another inmate.

On Monday, a judge ordered restitution to the victim hit with the bottle in an amount yet to be determined.

Wow! What a glorious example of objective reporting and trenchant journalism -- NOT. Reminds me of the Red Queen in Alice in Wonderland.
