‘Swan Lake’ on deck for S.F. Ballet

“Fusion” will be reprised in S.F. Ballet’s 2009 season.
SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - San Francisco Ballet announces its 76th season today, a lineup including a new “Swan Lake,” works by Mark Morris and a reprise of six dances featured in this year’s New Works Festival.
The 2009 season begins with “Nutcracker,” which runs Dec. 11-28, 2008; the opening gala is Jan. 21, 2009. Eight programs in alternating repertory continue from Jan. 27 to May 9.
“I am especially pleased to present an all-new ‘Swan Lake,’ the first for the company since my last production which premiered over 20 years ago. The work will be completely restaged and feature new scenery and costumes,” said artistic director Helgi Tomasson.
Program 1 — Features the revival of Tomasson’s “Prism,” a world premiere by the ballet’s choreographer in residence Yuri Possokhov, and the revival of George Balanchine’s “The Four Temperaments.”
Program 2 — Opening Jan. 29, includes encore performances of Stanton Welch’s “Naked” and Val Caniparoli’s “Ibsen’s House”; and the revival of William Forsythe’s “in the middle, somewhat elevated.”
Program 3 — Begins Feb. 21 with the world premiere of Tomasson’s new “Swan Lake.” Tomasson first staged “Swan Lake” for the company in 1988. The new production will be completely restaged, with scenery and costumes by European designer Jonathan Fensom.
Program 4 — Opens March 12 and includes the encore of Tomasson’s “On a Theme of Paganini,” the company premiere of Antony Tudor’s “Jardin aux Lilas” and the revival of Jerome Robbins’ “The Concert” (or, The Perils of Everybody).
Program 5 — The All-Morris Program opens March 13, featuring “A Garden,” “Joyride” and “Sandpaper Ballet.” The choreographer has a unique partnership with San Francisco, having made seven works for the ballet — more than for any other company aside from his own.
Program 6 — Opening April 3, it includes the revival of Balanchine’s “Stravinsky Violin Concerto” and the encore presentations of Christopher Wheeldon’s “Within the Golden Hour” and Robbins’ “West Side Story Suite.”
Program 7 — Opens April 25 and features Balanchine’s evening-length “Jewels,” a ballet in three parts; and “Emeralds,” “Rubies,” and Diamonds,” set to music by Gabriel Fauré, Igor Stravinsky, and Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky, respectively.
Program 8 — Opens April 28 and includes the encore performance of Possokhov’s “Fusion,” the company premiere of Alexei Ratmansky’s “Russian Seasons,” and the encore performance of Jorma Elo’s “Double Evil,” which premiered during the recent New Works Festival.
Fifty-six performances make up the season, concerts are at the War Memorial Opera House, 301 Van Ness Ave. Subscriptions, which start at $30, are now on sale. Single tickets will be available online at www.sfballet.org in November or at (415) 865-2000 starting Jan. 5, 2009.
