Crash on western NY road kills Iraq war veteran

BATAVIA, N.Y. (Map, News) - Funeral services are set for an Iraq war veteran who died when his car crashed on an upstate road while he headed to work on what was supposed to be his day off.

The Genesee County Sheriff's Department says Matthew Hebell of Batavia was killed when his car hit a utility pole along Route 98 in Alexandria, 37 miles southwest of Rochester.

The 22-year-old Army veteran recently returned home after a tour in Iraq.

His family says the crash occurred as he was headed to his job at the state veterans' home in Batavia, where he worked as a nurse's aid. Relatives say he was supposed to be off but volunteered to work.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

Hebell will be buried with full military honors on Wednesday.
