Head of Washington convention center steps down

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - The woman in charge of overseeing the D.C. convention center has resigned for personal reasons, according to officials.

Reba Pittman Walker stepped down Friday after more than two years as chief of the Washington Convention Center Authority. The resignation comes after several recent spats with D.C. Mayor Adrian Fenty over a ceremony to rename the convention center.

Walker’s resignation takes effect May 30, according to a spokesperson for the authority.

Beverly Perry, a Pepco official who chairs the authority, said the board was satisfied with Walker’s performance. She said the board wanted more retail, business and conventions to come to the convention center but that Walker’s departure was purely for her own “personal issues.”

Last fall Walker had some minor clashes with the Fenty administration when the Walter E. Washington Convention Center was renamed for the city’s first elected mayor. Perry said there were problems with how the ceremony was handled, including former Mayor Sharon Pratt Kelly not being invited, and the event wasn’t scheduled on Fenty’s calendar soon enough.

Before Walker was named chief executive officer in June 2006, she had been acting general manager for six months.

She was one of the first staff members at the city’s original convention center and for 12 years worked in increasingly high-ranking positions until becoming director of operations. Her experience prior to the convention center was with Volume Services America, a leading food and management services provider for convention and sporting venues.

The original venue was replaced with a larger convention center that opened in 2003. Since then it has generated about $500 million in annual economic impact to the District, according to the authority.

The building itself boasts 2.3 million square feet and houses the largest art collection of any convention center in the nation.
