Student stabbed on Delhi campus dies from stab wounds

DELHI, N.Y. (Map, News) - A 22-year-old student died after he was stabbed at an upstate New York college, and four men are in jail without bail, authorities said.

Tyshawn Bierria had been in critical condition at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown since the stabbing early Sunday in an apparent outdoor fight on campus at the State University College of Technology at Delhi, officials said. A former prep basketball star from Queens, he also played for one season at the college.

He died Thursday, hospital spokeswoman Karen Huxtable said. He was declared dead after a brain scan and his organs were donated, his mother Sharon said in a statement distributed Friday at the college 63 miles southwest of Albany. "His heart still beats. His lungs still breathe. His organs were restored for a purpose," she said.

About 225 students and others attended a prayer service Tuesday for Bierra. He had been stabbed multiple times, damaging his aorta, and he bled heavily, the Oneonta Daily Star reported.

Another student and three other men, all from New York City, were charged with gang assault and attempted murder. Police identified them as student Jack Daniel Boampong, 19; William Dorsey Jr., 22; Raymond Brightman, 21; and Olanrewaju Ogunwuyi, 21.

A grand jury was convened to consider other charges. A call to Delaware County District Attorney Richard Northrup was not immediately returned Saturday.

College spokesman Joel Smith said Boampong lived in a dormitory near Bierria's dorm. "There was a fight of some nature that led to his injuries," he said.

Bierra had earned enough credits to graduate this month with an associate's degree, Smith said. He played basketball at Delhi in the 2006-2007 season.

In his 27 years, the college with 2,200 students has had no similar assaults, much less fatalities, Smith said, and despite the connotation of the charges there are no gangs at the school. "This is an unfathomable event for SUNY Delhi," he said.
