SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - The director of the San Francisco-based nonprofit Fritz Institute was awarded the first University of San Francisco California Prize for Service and the Common Good. Fritz will be honored at a dinner tonight.

What is the BayPrep Initiative? A group of really concerned philanthropists asked us to create standards and measurements in preparation work for a disaster. What they saw was, although there were many plans for disaster, there really was no preparation for community-based organizations.

What kind of standards and measurements? The material is one part of it. Most of it is, is your building going to be standing? Is your business going to be in business the following day? ... People have to have a place to work from. Whatever space they operate from has to be in order. No. 2, a big one here in San Francisco: Most people that work in community-based organizations, operations and police don’t live in San Francisco. They have to have different staffs available to operate.

How are San Francisco organizations measuring up? They’re faring well. There’s a high consciousness around disasters. … There’s been a good amount of energy. What there hasn’t been is, “Let’s put the pieces together.”

Are they completely up to speed? They’re still vulnerable, but with the work done so far by many of the key organizations, their chances are literally growing by the day. … It’s really unprecedented that this kind of stuff is happening.

When will results be announced? We should have our first couple of organizations that have come up to these standards by June or July.

For the Captain to even give an interview , contradicts what residents hda feared all along. Why when this woman told what she knew was killed and her murder remains unsolved.? MPD need to really do more than only show up after fact. They need to do more policing and stop making excuses for how laxed they are in solving crimes. They have a protocol that does not help the prosecutors when they do get case. So many families in the District have lost loved ones and have been harassed by MPD that they don't even get the respect of serving and protecting. Read the Inspector General 2007 report of how unprofessional these detectives are. You can read a newspaper and stare into the the tv screen, but families in DC are sick and tired of the murders and tired of being accused of MPD blunders and mishaps...
