SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - A controversial plan to build a new natural gas-burning power plant at Potrero Hill to replace a more polluting plant in the same area is slated to go before a Board of Supervisors subcommittee on Monday.
New opposition to the energy plan has surfaced in recent months.
On Monday, the San Francisco Planning and Urban Research Association and the Sierra Club were among co-signers on a letter that urged city leaders to “table the outdated power plant proposal” and pursue “a truly revolutionary plan for a renewable energy future.”
Additionally, the three candidates vying to represent The City in the state senate told The Examiner they would favor more environmentally friendly alternatives to shut down the current Potrero Hill plant.
Nathan Ballard, a spokesperson for Mayor Gavin Newsom said that while the mayor is eager to shut down the existing power plant, state regulators have given The City “limited options” for doing so.
“We remain open to better options,” said Ballard.
The City has already considered other proposals, Board of Supervisors president Aaron Peskin said.
“We’ve explored alternatives now for half a dozen years,” he said.
