Baltimore, Wilmington in nation's top 10 for new green roofs

BALTIMORE (Map, News) - A new survey found Wilmington, Del. and Baltimore are among the leading cities nationwide for building green roofs.

Green Roofs For Healthy Cities says Wilmington was number two and Baltimore number three in square footage of green roof projects built last year.

Chicago topped the list with more than 500,000 square feet of new green roofs. Wilmington built 196,000 new square feet of green roofs and Baltimore built 122,000. Washington D.C. and Philadelphia were seventh and eighth, respectively.

The organization's international green roof conference starts Wednesday in Baltimore. The group says green roofs, which use plants to absorb rainfall and provide insulation, reduce energy consumption and create cleaner air and rivers.
