Fenty, Lanier defend District police tactics, cite crime decrease

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - Mayor Adrian Fenty and D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier on Monday defended policing tactics in the wake of an April spike in homicides, noting that violent crime overall remains down compared to last year.

Northeast Washington has been struck by a spate of shootings and homicides in spite of an increased police presence in the neighborhoods hardest hit by the violence.

Police have doubled the number of patrols and called in drug, gun and auto theft units, Lanier said.

“Violent crime is occurring in small pockets, and we need to be aggressive in those pockets,” Lanier said.

But police officers and union officials have maintained that Lanier’s tactics, including All Hands on Deck initiatives like one planned for the weekend, are sapping the department’s vitality.

A group of officers in the 5th District filed a grievance over the weekend to complain about the long hours.

Lanier deflected criticism by the police union that officers had to work 13 days in a row. “We’re using everything we have in our toolbox,” Lanier said.

The chief refused to discuss details of the weekend crime spree because the investigations are ongoing and police are still trying to get a handle on it. But she pointed out that the violence erupted shortly after a major drug bust in early April.

Since March 18, there have been 72 arrests for drug distribution in the 5th  District, up from 10 over the same period last year.

Violent crime is down 3 percent in the city this year to date, and there are two fewer murders, Fenty said. Sixty-five percent of homicides have been closed, up from this time last year at  when only 35 percent of murders had been solved. Police have recovered 312 guns in four months, about a 100 more than last year.

“We’re at a really good point” for turning the crime spike around, Fenty said.

It's amusing to see that some people "disagreed" with "El Guapo" on his comment noting that Prof. Rasmusen admits his 21 percent number is wrong. How do you disagree with a fact? Anyone can check this by searching for "Eric Rasmusen" "immigration" and "21 percent." We have to wonder why the Examiner published the 21 percent figure more than a month after Prof. Rasmusen had abandoned it. And why doesn't it run a correction now that people have pointed out the error?

I agree with the former Chambliss student. All in all it's pretty sloppy with the facts. That Eric Rasmusen cite where even Rasmusen himself agreed that his figure was overstated by over 300%. I mean come on.

The illegal immigration problem is the neuvo cuisine, but few want to confess its been a few decades in the making and just as serious as it is today. The illegal immigration and liberalized legal immigration are compounded by a certain political party that has brow beaten productive and pro-active enforcement efforts for decades. They have dealt the intelligence community the same blow and restrictions over the decades, which this current President inherited in 2001. This was put squarely in his lap by the guilty and blamed on him within months of 9/11. I left that party after witnessing the bloodletting of the 1990s, and nothing was done. The left never even considered them human riohts violations and the ACLU was silent. We have a new face of "totally kewl, new change turn the page" who will ensure a reversal of the "Bush Lied People Died years" who promises a real forthcoming horror, and everyone believes him and loves him.

The author mentions Prof Rasmusen's estimate that illegal immigrants commit 21% of cimres in the US. Rasmusen has since revised his estimate to 6.1% which is still overstated because the figures used to calculate that estimate were for non-citizens most of whom are not illegal aliens. One would expect to see such misstatements of facts on a blog run by a hack like Rasmusen. It's disappointing to see in what I thought was a reputable medium.

If a 26 year old U.S. citizen had sexual relations with a 14 year old girl he would be in the slammer for 5 years for statutory rape and would have to register as a sexual predator. The prosecuting attorneys consider this part of the Latino culture and don't charge them with a serious crime. If they come here they must adapt to our culture and laws.

People like Luis Hurtado, what can be said of them. They are simply third world mentality all the way. What does he mean the bad economy is "pushing" more "immigrants"(illegal aliens) to turn to crime. Growing up in the United States I was taught in school that crime is a choice. No one is "pushed" to it. But as I said, these people come from a crime ridden nation, that never taught morality, where the bribe is the rule and stealing is clever if you get away with it. But El Presidente Bush, and Senator John,"Americans wouldn't pick lettuce for fift dollars an hour", say we need these family values. And Obama just plain wants to eliminate the borders of this nation. Write in, in November, Dr. Ron Paul, Ralph Nader, or any other person who actually cares about Americans and America. McCain and Obama are totally in the pockets of the corporate fascists. They could not be more worthless to honest, hardworking, taxpaying Americans. They are in fact, utterly toxic to the American citizenry.

every crime committed by an illegal alien is a crime that would not have happened if the illegal alien wasn't here in the first place. sure americans commit crimes too, but illegals are criminals to begin with just by crossing our border without documents. if there are no more construction jobs and they can't get anyone to hire them due to e-verify, why don't the take the hint and GO HOME??? they're like ignorant pests who refuse to believe that nobody wants them here. they'd rather stay here and steal than go back to their home countries. they have an agenda. more anchor babies for the reconquista. Every single illegal alien needs to be deported. It is time to take our country back. We use to live by the rule of law; one law for everyone applied equally. Illegal aliens are lawbreakers. They decide which laws they will follow and which they will ignore. They are attacking the very fabric of our society. If they are afraid of the police and don't report crime, too bad. It is the price they pay for being criminals. They should return to their own country.

It says that police cite illegal immigrants as a reason for a wave of burglaries, but I don't see that citation anywhere. This sounds to me like fear-mongering. Someone has an opinion about illegal immigration, they want to make it, so they lie or distort the facts. Great article, but it needs a different title. One that actually fits the description.

Crime in DC is not declining. It has been increasing for years but the Chief of Police plays games with the statistics to make the outcome suit her needs. Chief Ramsey did this and his prototype Chief Lanier is doing the same. No surprises here.

Lanier is not doing a bad job. She has alot to fix considering how bad Ramsey screwed up this department. The best move she has made by far is demoting Brian Jordan, Willie Dandridge, and Robin Hoey. How these three even got promoted to their old positions is beyond me. It must have been a Ramsey thing, because to put it simply, they are not very smart, they are kind of a cross between being stupid and ignorant. Now, the worst move she has made so far is promoting Diane Groomes. I worked with her in 3-D before I retired and this woman has a very serious mental problem. As everyone on the department knows by now, she is bi-polar and needs serious medicial treatment to stop her abusive behavior towards the people she works with. Chief Lanier, you really ned to reconsider this one, she is a bad seed. All in all, not too bad of a job Chief.
