FREDERICK, Md. (Map, News) - Two Maryland state lawmakers are being honored by the American Solar Energy Society for their leadership in boosting demand for electricity generated by the sun.
The Boulder, Colorado-based group says it will give Democratic Senator Rob Garagiola of Montgomery County and Democratic Delegate Sue Hecht of Frederick County its Government Leadership Award at an event Tuesday in Frederick.
Society spokesman Neal Lurie says the award is for a 2007 Maryland law requiring 2 percent of the energy generated in Maryland by 2022 to come from solar. The requirement is part of the state's renewable energy portfolio.
Lurie says the measure positions Maryland to be a leader in solar generation and green job creation.
