Odenton man struck, killed by suspected drunken driver

BALTIMORE (Map, News) - An Odenton man was killed Wednesday when an allegedly intoxicated driver struck him as he put gas into his car, according to Howard police.

Luther Beamer III, 23, ran out of gas in his 2002 GMC Sierra on the right-hand shoulder of Route 32 near Deer Hill Road at the Carroll line near Sykesville, police said.

Beamer was putting fuel into his car about 11:15 p.m. when a 2002 Toyota Tacoma pickup traveling northbound struck him, police said.

Beamer was pronounced dead at Howard County General Hospital.

Beamer’s passenger, Shawn Broughton, 25, could not be reached for comment.

The Tacoma driver, Aleksandr Dyubanov, 46, of Taneytown, had a blood alcohol content of .22 — more than twice the legal limit — at the time of the incident, police said.

Dyubanov was charged with driving under the influence, driving while intoxicated, manslaughter by automobile and homicide by motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, police said.

He is being held in the Howard County Detention Center on $300,000 bail.

Dyubanov does not have a previous record of traffic violations, according to court records.

But Beamer pleaded guilty in July 2007w to driving under the influence of alcohol after police stopped him on Route 424 at Seton Drive in Anne Arundel.

Beamer was given a suspended sentence of one year by an Anne Arundel District Court judge.

Charges of negligent driving and unsafe lane changing stemming from the same incident were placed on the inactive court docket, according to court records.

Beamer’s family members, who live in Gerrardstown, could not be reached for comment.

I am one of Luke's older sister, that was never contacted for a comment! I cannot believe that CAROLYN PIERCE has the the nerve to publish driving history on my deceased brother! I do not agree with my brother driving under the influence of alcohol, I am sure if he was found guilty he was punished for it! Did he kill a human being? NO! "ALEKSANDR DYUBANOV" made a choice to drink and drive the night he hit and killed my brother. He also made the choice not to STOP his vehicle, this would be considered "HIT AND RUN" right? He made the choice of getting behind the wheel of his car under the influence therefore using his vehicle as a deadly weapon. "ALEKSANDR DYUBANOV" should be punished to the strongest degree! Because, he does not have a record is that supposed to clear him from "MURDER"? I don't think so! I will never get to see my brother again. "ALEKSANDR DYUBANOV" will most likely do a short sentence, and then be able to drink and drive again. Go figure! Mary C Beamer

you are rude and disgusting!! Luke was an amazing person and you make it seem like it's no big deal that he has lost his life because of his driving record! I can't believe anybody approved this article.

The reporter covering this story added unnecessary and irrelevant information at the end of the article. Mr. Beamer died as a result of the negligent and irresponsible behavior of a drunk driver. Ms. Pierce has managed to victimize the victim. If she were after irony, it was misplaced and irresponsible on her part. Next time, report the facts relevant to the crime.

Today as the rain fell softly on the roof of a funeral home in Bowie, Luke Beamer the son of D. and Luke beamer was prayed for by many at his memorial service. There were so many friends and family that they spilled out on the sidewalk and spoke of the man who had grown up to be strong, independent and kind. There was much more to this young man than what your artical stated and it is sad that you will not a write something about the true tragedy that has struck his family. These are thing your article did not say; he was a beautiful man with hair black as night and had a smile that would melt your heart. He was smart and saw the future ahead of him and knew it was finally with in his reach. Lastly for all of us who were there today our world will not be the same that is the true story.

Carolyn - I attended services today for Luke where he was remembered for the wonderful young man he was. I want you to know that your article is deplorable. Sadly, family members have seen this. I can think of nothing harder than saying good bye to a child. I have a couple of questions for you - do you and your family members live a life free of mistakes? Have you ever experienced a loss like this? I agree with every single comment below. You owe all who loved him an apology. I pray that your reporting becomes more ethical, moral and compassionate. I do think you should be very ashamed of this article.

I completely agree with each comment below. My daughter was a good friend of Luke's. I pray that you never have to experience what his family and friends are going through at this time. You should be ashamed of yourself Carolyn Pierce! Ashamed! I too am so glad that Shawn was with him and very glad he had no comment. May you sleep well tonight.

I am very offended by the fact that you thought it was important to mention the driving record of Luke Beamer to add some trash to your report! Do you really think that people who read have no heart? It is plain as the nose on your face that the person who was in need of respect and concern has just been smeared in the press, as well as lost his life! This Luke was a kind man, and he was the nicest most respectful son! It is so very sad He just happened to be on the 32 when a drunk driver came flying down and took his life before he ever got a chance to get married, or have children, or before he went to serve in the militaryy to protect this country. My son will have to live the rest of his life with the memory of Lukes death and now his parents will have the memory of the fact that someone chose you to write this article. What a shame. I am grateful that Shawn was by his side, and I am glad that he had no comment it seems to me that he was raised right!

What is it with you news people and trashing the victim's names instead of the one who committed the crime. You do owe the family an apology for what you've said. His past record has nothing to do with what he was before he died. He was clean and getting his life back on track. Instead of taking into account how the family of the victim feels, you just made it sound as though he was just as bad as the drunk who hit him. I'm disgusted by your approach to this and thoroughly offened by this article. Luke's past record had nothing to do with this incident. And to Shawn Broughton, thank you for trying to save him and being there. I can only imagine what it was like to be there and see that, but I'm glad that at least he was able to spend his last moments happy. No matter how much I wish it had never happened I am thankful he was not alone.

I would like to comment on the story of Luther Beamer to Carolyn. First off the story was ok until you comment of Luther having charges. This was not nessery and you made it sound very bad for Luther. It was he that was killed not the drunk that hit him and this should not have been printed in the paper. You have no idea who this kid is and how good he has been doing. You don't even have the whole story. I think that you owe an apology to the readers and mostly the family and friends. I am a good friend of the family and it was Shawns best friend. It was not Luke that made the mistake it was the drunken driver that made the mistake and took a life of a good man. Surely you have no children or no sympathy for family or friends. Again, it was a DRUNKEN DRIVER that took a life of a young man and robbed him his family and friends of a great life. Carolyn Peirce I believe that you own a lot of people and apology.

'Examiner Reader', I totally agree with you. I did not know Luke, but Shawn Brougton is my godson, and he witnessed his best friend killed by a drunk driver, and even tried to save his life by administering CPR. This drunk driver even stopped, and backed up his car, almost running over Luke again! Shawn was sitting in the passenger seat while Luke was putting gas in the car. Why has this not been reported? CAROLYN PEIRCE -Please answer this question: WHY did you have to emphasize that Luke had a past DUI, while also pointing out that the DRUNK DRIVER had no previous record of traffic violations??? Come on, Ms Peirce - please defend yourself in public!

I'm sorry, but it seems to me that Luther Beamer was not at fault..AT ALL. But you have brought up his past driving record several times. And ending the article with a negative impression of Luke (Luther). The drunk driver should be the only negativity in these articles. I know this kid, he's been through a lot and has turned his life around. When he died, he was clean and sober and getting his life back on track.
