Capitals look to their future

WASHINGTON (Map, News) - One day after the season’s sudden end in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals, it was moving day at Kettler Capitals Iceplex.

Equipment was stacked and duffel bags filled as Capitals players prepared to disperse for the offseason. Management doesn’t get much of a break, however, and Caps general manager George McPhee has several big decisions on his plate this summer.

He has made one already. Coach Bruce Boudreau, who took over the team on an interim basis Thanksgiving Day and was named to the position on a permanent basis December 26, said he has signed a multi-year contract.

“Bruce is our coach and will be for a long time,” said McPhee, who does not discuss contract details. “He’s earned it, deserves it and will be here.”

Boudreau led the Caps to a 37-17-7 record and a playoff berth. Exactly what his team looks like next September is still up in the air. The Caps have six restricted free agents to sign, including defensemen Mike Green and Shaone Morrisonn. They also have six unrestricted free agents, including goalies Cristobal Huet and Olie Kolzig.

Rookie center Nicklas Backstrom is one player certain to return. The 20-year old Swede on Monday was named one of three Calder Trophy finalists, awarded to the NHL rookie of the year. Backstrom scored a goal in each of the final four playoff games.

Caps captain Chris Clark said he has no plans to undergo surgery on the groin injury that limited him to just one game after Nov. 28. Instead, he will work with a specialist to determine an offseason rehab plan.

Backstom was the 4th overall pick not the 6th.

Yes, the Caps did play a heck of a game, and they DID win in OT picking up 2 huge points. After such a horrible start it is truly amazing how they have rebounded to be in this position under Coach Boudreau. Let's Go Caps!!

Heck of a game, shame they didn't win in overtime. A point is a point though. Chris
