The ordinance would affect jails, the San Mateo Medical Center and its clinics, government buildings and the San Mateo Event Center.
The proposed ban may be a first step to nixing Styrofoam and other non-recyclable plastics in all of the county’s unincorporated areas, said Supervisor Adrienne Tissier, who proposed the legislation. The new ordinance would require county departments and vendors to use biodegradable or compostable materials for food service ware products.
Supervisors will gauge how the ban affects the county’s departmental budgets and 5,000 employees before discussing extending the law to the unincorporated areas next year, Tissier said.
