SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - The 102nd anniversary of the 1906 earthquake will be commemorated today at Lotta’s Fountain.

The event will begin at 5:12 a.m., which is the time the temblor struck San Francisco. Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said the event is a good reminder of disaster preparedness.

After the event, a procession will go to the infamous golden fire hydrant on the corner of 20th and Church streets, which is said to have been the sole source of water that thousands of volunteers used to save the south side of the Mission district during the aftermath of the quake.
