Washington, D.C. (Map, News) - Nightclub promoters who used fliers featuring nearly naked women to advertise events have agreed to stop distributing the cards in D.C., including the busy Southwest Waterfront where they were most prominent.
D.C. Attorney General Peter Nickles reached a legal agreement with promoters Eric Hudson and Wayne Mason to stop passing out the fliers, which prominently display the ample and barely clad backsides of exotic dancers at Forestville's Bazz & Crue events hall. Another card promotes D2's Gentlemen's Club in Hyattsville.
The promoters have revoked their contract with MetroMac, the printer and distributor of the cards, officials said.
Ward 6 D.C. Councilman Tommy Wells, who represents the Southwest Waterfront, brought the issue to the Nickles' attention following neighborhood complaints about littering and the fliers' content. The glossy, full-color cards were distributed by hand and stuck under cars' windshield wipers outside clubs such as H20.
"While there is more to be done, I'm thrilled to win the first battle in putting an end to these pornographic fliers that are left on cars, dumped on sidewalks, and otherwise strewn around the nightclubs in Southwest DC," Wells said in a statement.
He went on to say he will stay in close contact with the attorney general to ensure the fliers are not handed out "anywhere else in the city."
To stop their distribution, Wells and the attorney general's office focused on the litter they cause rather than their content, which could have created tricky First Amendment issues, said Charles Allen, Well's chief of staff.
"I'm not really concerned much about the content," said Max Skolnik, a Southwest advisory neighborhood commissioner. "Really the issue is litter. There's masses and masses of these things dumped throughout the neighborhood. I'm coming at this simply from a cleanliness perspective."
