THE WATER HORSE: LEGEND OF THE DEEP — TWO-DISC SPECIAL EDITION
Even though the movie’s theatrical release date was pushed back and it was a box-office flop, that doesn’t mean it’s bad. This nice family film reinvents the legend of the Loch Ness Monster, depicted here as friendly, loving seahorse who befriends a young English boy who misses his dad. The pair’s bond doesn’t break, even though the creature grows to mammoth proportions. Special features include six detailed behind-the-scenes featurettes and deleted scenes. Both the widescreen and full-screen versions are in this set. The Blu-ray edition includes a video game. Price: $28.96 to $38.96. Rent or buy: Families ought to buy.
MATLOCK — SEASON ONE
At last — particularly for seniors — here’s the DVD debut of the classic Andy Griffith series about a lawyer from the South with razor-sharp wit and even better courtroom skills. All 25 episodes from the first season are on seven discs. The set also has the feature-length pilot film “Diary of a Perfect Murder.” Price: $30. Rent or buy: Buy, if a fan.
PERRY MASON — 50th ANNIVERSARY EDITION
Just in time to celebrate the anniversary of one of the longest-running legal series in the history of television comes a “best of” DVD set featuring 12 particularly gripping episodes from the show’s nine seasons. Robert Redford, Bette Davis, Burt Reynolds, James Coburn, Barbara Bain and Adam West are among the notable guest stars. The only problem is that except for the special features, this material already has been released on “Perry Mason” complete season sets. Price: $39.99. Rent or buy: Rent.
ROCK OF LOVE — THE COMPLETE FIRST SEASON
VH1 has cornered the market on rockers-in-search-of-love reality shows with “Flavor of Love” and “Rock of Love.” (Call them low-brow versions of “The Bachelor.”) “Rock of Love” has former Poison lead singer Bret Michaels trying to find a mate from a selection of 25 scantily-clad women. While it won’t win any achievement awards, the show, now in its second season, is a guilty pleasure. This set includes 13 episodes with new bonus footage. Price: $34.97. Rent or buy: Rent.
Other DVDs debuting Tuesday: “The Dream Factory — Volume 3,” “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles — Season 6,” “The Final Season,” “The Adventures of Baron Munchausen,” “Music Within,” “Walk Hard — The Dewey Cox Story,” “Tilt” and “Lions for Lambs.”
