Major League Baseball prognosticators think the rebuilding Orioles will have one of the worst records in franchise history. But Manager Dave Trembley, in his first full season with club, is committed to turning around a team that has posted 10 straight losing seasons. Trembley was a minor league manager for 20 seasons before taking over the Orioles during the middle of last season following the firing of Sam Perlozzo.

What were your emotions opening up the season, compared to last year?

This isn’t much different than when I took over last year. This is more about the direction the team is going in now, not about Dave Trembley. I think it’s more about the foundation and the plan we tried to establish in the offseason.”

Did you ever think this moment in the sun would come for you?

No, you don’t. You don’t plan for something like this because if you do, you lose focus on what it is you’re supposed to do. Last year, I was just fortunate to be here as a coach after all the years I spent in the minor leagues. I understand the significance of it. I understand the responsibility that goes along with it, but I really haven’t spent a great amount of time dwelling on anything other than getting the team ready to play.

How do you unify a team of veterans and promising young players?

You’ve got to have the players and you’ve got to communicate. I think you utilize your people — your coaches. You explain to your coaches what you want to do. The veteran guys on the club — I tried to stay in touch with them throughout the offseason ... and tried to get some input from them. I think the thing you have to do with people is you have to give them responsibility. When you give people responsibility, then there is no gray area for what expectations are. It would appear that the attitude of the club is that no one thinks they’re better than anybody else.
