SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Evan Frederickson had a career-high 13 strikeouts in seven shutout innings as the USF baseball team upset Cal 5-1 Tuesday in the Dante Benedetti Classic at AT&T Park.

The junior left-hander was locating his mid-90s fastball from the start. He struck out the side in the top of the first and fanned at least one batter in every inning as the Dons (17-11) beat a hot Bears team for their ninth win in 10 games. Cal (18-6-1) moved up to No. 7 in the Baseball America poll after sweeping then-No. 5 Long Beach State over the weekend and had scored four runs off Frederickson in a 6-2 victory over USF on March 11. But the Bears managed just four hits against the 6-foot-6 Virginian on Tuesday — two of which came on bunts — and put just four balls out of the infield.

“It’s awesome to beat a good team like that in a place like this,” Fredrickson said after lowering his ERA from 6.84 to 5.40. “I’ve felt that good at points this year but have never been able to string it together for a full game. I was glad I could do it tonight.”

USF has now won all three incarnations of the Dante Benedetti Classic, including a 7-6 victory over Cal in the inaugural 2006 game. It was the Dons’ first win over a

top-10 team since beating Nebraska in the 2006 NCAA regional.

The Dons scored all of their runs in the bottom of the first, with seven of their first eight batters reaching base. After Joey Railey grounded out to start the game, Connor Bernatz, Kyle Morgan, Mitchell Bialosky and Ryan Lipkin followed with successive singles to make the score 1-0 off Cal starter Chris Petrini. Drew Johnson was then hit by a pitch to force in a run and Dane Braunecker walked to make it 3-0. Bobby Ethel then hit a bouncer that could have been an inning-ending double play, but it rolled under the Cal shortstop’s glove and into the outfield, plating the final two Dons runs.

Bialosky and Garrett Luippold pitched the last two innings to finish off the win for USF, with Cal’s lone run coming on a sacrifice fly by Brian Guinn with one out in the top of the ninth.

Lipkin went 2-for-4 for the Dons and is now batting a team-best

30-for-74 (.405). USF resumes West Coast Conference play Friday at Benedetti Diamond against Loyola Marymount. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
