A 55-year-old woman was struck by a historic Muni street car in front of the Ferry Building on Tuesday, though her injuries were not life-threatening, according to police officials.

The woman, whose identity was not released, was hit by an F-Market street car but her legs did not get caught under the vehicle, which prevented any serious injuries from occurring, said Sgt. Steve Mannina, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department.

“Fortunately, she fell backwards when she was struck so she didn’t get trapped in the wheels,” Mannina said.

The woman was transferred to San Francisco General Hospital after the accident, which occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m., said Mannina.

The street car was not travelling at a high rate of speed, but police are investigating the collision to determine which party was at fault, Mannina said.

The woman was the 17th person to be struck by a Muni vehicle this year, according to San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency spokesperson Judson True. One man — 40-year-old Mark Callaghan — was killed in 2008, True said.

In November 2007, Muni ordered a new batch of brakes for their Milan-style trams, the orange and black-painted vehicles that frequently carry passengers on the F-Market line.

True said the street car involved in yesterday’s collision was a PCC model, and that braking was not a factor in Tuesday’s accident.

Service between the Ferry Building and Fisherman’s Wharf on the street car was shut down for about 90 minutes following the accident, although shuttle buses were available for passengers, True said. No other service routes were affected by the accident.
