SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - A fire alarm on four legs may have been the only difference between an unfortunate two-alarm fire in the Bayview district and a deadly Easter tragedy.
Residents of the home, who declined to be named, spent their Easter Sunday pulling charred contents from the three-story wood-frame house in the
1200 block of Revere Avenue. They said the batteries were dead in the home’s smoke detectors, but that didn’t stop their pet Dalmatian, Lady, from sounding her own alarm.
Lady smelled the smoke early and entered a bedroom, waking the occupant with a whimper, family members said. Four adults and one child escaped before the flames engulfed the home, authorities said. Nobody was injured, and both Lady and her other canine friend made it out of the home safely.
The five residents were displaced after the blaze gutted their home, according to San Francisco Fire Department officials. The fire was first reported about 5:11 a.m., and it took 66 firefighters to get the blaze under control by 6:25 a.m.
While a keen sense of smell may be one reason canine companions make good smoke alarms, fire officials urge residents to maintain their mechanical detectors. In 2007 alone, San Francisco firefighters fought more than 1,400 fires at homes without working smoke detectors. With spring just beginning, fire officials said it’s a good time to incorporate a smoke detector battery check with spring cleaning activities.
Residents of the Bayview home said they believe the fire was caused by an electrical shortage. Despite being homeless, they were more than grateful for being unharmed, thanks to their spotted friend.

75,000,000 died during the Black Plague starting with 1354! What percent of this were European Christians? How does this play with America's and West Indian's Christians who were also exterminated because of their Christianity? What dreaded diseases brought them down from San Francisco to Gilroy and who is responsible other than France? If October 31 marks "All Saints Day" in Europe, why do we call Mexico's "Days of the Dead," not "All Saints Day" when it begins on the following day: 1, 2, and 3 November?

This story reveals yet more fear mongering propagated by the media. The real story here is not the possibility of a plague, but the desperation of an Examiner reporter looking to scoop a story. Give me a break.

I would like to know why the police & fire department refused to investigate and take action against the tenants that discarded cigarettes onto my boat cover, on the dry grass area around my stack of firewood. On two occasions I found burned wood laminate strips placed on my deck and dry grass near the boat. But most of all want to know why after 12 or more false calls of burning trash “ and the city knows damn well they were FALSE CALLS as they broke into my home only to find firewood in the EPA woodstove” WHY DID YOU CONTINUE TO HARRASS ME ? AND NOT TAKE ACTION ON THE TENANTS THAT MADE THESE FALSE CALLS OF TRASH BEING BURNED?

Why is this a story? It was $1,200 and the city reviewed and approved. Sounds like someone is trying to make something out of nothing. Shame on you.
