Woman hit Thursday by truck dies

I think she deserved it. When its dark, it's easier for a ped to spot a driver instead of vice versa. All that BS about peds having the right of way is stupid anyways. Just like drivers need to look out for them, they should watch out for drivers too.

This same situation exists in Corona Del Mar, CA. Drivers will run you down as soon as look at you.

I heard the Taraval Police Station did a pedestrian sting just a few days ago in the Sunset at Lincoln/30th. In an hour, they gave out 20 tickets to drivers failing to yield to a plainclothes officer pedestrian.

It is very important to approach being a pedestrian in S.F. w/extreme paranoia. In this very hostile city a pedestrian is safe from no one. This includes other pedestrians, scooter riders, cars, skateboarders, people in wheelchairs, bicyclists (especially in the crosswalk area), and the inattentive (possibly on drugs, this is SF, after all) pedestrian who walks out in to traffic against a red light to meet their doom. Hostility, arrogance and stupidity have created a very dangerous situation in this city that needs to change its name.

"The only reason that right turns are prohibited at this intersection is to make a statement" OR to prevent pedestrians/bicyclists/scooterists, who don't stand a chance against an AUTOMOBILE or even a FORD 450 PICK UP TRUCK FULL OF CEMENT from being nearly killed. Why don't you take my place? Maybe you'll have some sympathy for what getting run over FEELS like.

This morning I was walking into this intersection when a driver literally peeled out from the left-hand eastbound lane of Market, cut across the (still stopped) cars in the right-hand lane, and entered the freeway - nearly hitting several pedestrians (not bicyclists) in the crosswalk who were crossing with the signal. He had to make the right turn from the left lane because they've now installed a concrete barrier mostly blocking right turns from the right lane. When I walked down McCoppin to Gough and Otis, I could see that Otis had almost no cars waiting at the intersection that leads to the South Van Ness freeway entrance. Is that so far out of the way? A tunnel under the end of McCoppin, as another commenter mentioned, would have been a great idea. As for a right-turn arrow, I don't think it would do any more good than the other attempts that are already in place. That car this morning would not have been inhibited by a mere signal, were he to happen to arrive when it's red

The north bound bike lane should have gone UNDER the highway off-ramp, down that half block of McCoppin, left onto Valenci and then back out to Market. Shazamm! A miracle with no deaths! Inconvenient? Oh, Please. That previous reader was right. Cars are bad and bikes are good in the shifty eyes of our stupervisors, potential deaths and all. Sleep well SFBC.

Leah: 'officials have had to make many late improvements because planners didn’t realize how dangerous the intersection would be.' Ummm, I believe there was a large neighborhood group in the North Mission that said all along that making this freeway touch down on Market street is suicidal - better to make it touch down further away (with fewer people), like Bryant St. But the Environmental Impact Report (EIR) was approved anyway - how? I'm still baffled for such a large ELEPHANT. It would be interesting to know which Planning Commissioner approved this boondoggle. Now, it's an expensive mess, no clear solutions short of taking it apart + starting over, and lives continue to be at risk. I don't get it...this is NOT rocket science.

so for those who don't want Octavia and Market Streets to be safe, then do you want 19th Avenue-Park Presido to be safe? Cyclist or not, the right turn from off the freeway to Market Street needs to be safer. I see people use the emergency lane just to get pass cars in bumper to bumper traffic then make an illegal turn right on Market Street. At least we can get attention to those drivers to pay more attention to those around them not just themselves.

Dang it I wish we could devote as much publicity BS to real problems like the seven killings year-todate. Oh yes I forgot, killings are quality of life crimes related to gangs and drug use. On the other hand people on bikes killed by autos are the "real" crime...maybe we should start the "San Francisco Murder Coalition (SFMC)" and then get some action from eveyone including the SF Board of Stupervisors.

YEah, I've never understood this. What about all the other countless intersections in The City where you can make a right turn? Everyone should be defensively looking out for each other, but all's this intersection needs is a separate right turn signal.

Why don't they just install a right-turn arrow [like the one for left turns from Market to Octavia and right turns from the highway to Market Street]? And the bicyclists need to obey traffic laws!

So far I've only heard of one accident involving a cyclist at that intersection. Where's the evidence that this intersection is any more dangerous than many other intersections in the city? It's simply dumb traffic management to not allow freeway-bound traffic to get off our surface streets as quickly as possible. The hysteria about this intersection is nothing but piffle fostered by the SF Bicycle Coalition and its many enablers in City Hall.

That intersection -- in fact the whole silly north end to the freeway -- is a badly conceived and dangerous boondoggle. Encouraging SF's already renegade & reckless subset of bicycle riders to shoot through yet another dangerous intersection was a criminal act. It should be turned into a normal intersection instead of an obstinate slap in the face of the reality of a city. If Bevan actually cared about people he would take the lead on that instead of a camera to catch the occasional confused drivers who can't figure out in a few seconds of driving what the hell all those confusing signs mean.
