Anne Arundel County (Map, News) - The Anne Arundel County House delegation lent its support today for a $2,000 public school teacher stipend and expanding police coverage in Annapolis.

In a unanimous decision, the delegation approved a bill that would incentivize nationally certified teachers in science, math, engineering and technology to stay in their position with taxpayer-funded stipends.

All nationally certified teachers already receive a $4,000 stipend. The additional money would help keep teachers from being lured away by incoming military contractors, as well as prepare the county’s youth for highly specialized jobs, officials said.

The delegation also approved of a bill that would expand the services of the Department of General Services police department, which is charged with protection state buildings in Annapolis, to help quell growing crime problems in the city.

DGS police would have an additional 1,000 feet added to their jurisdiction.

The delegation postponed a vote on a bill that would exempt non-profit groups from the county’s impact fee due to confusion over the bill.

All bills still need approval from committees and the House of Delegates.
