NANCY DREW
Hollywood studios have been remaking anything they can get their hands on, so why not “Nancy Drew”? This time, they got it right. Instead of butchering it and creating a feel-good, carefree air-headed version of the character, Nancy (Emma Roberts) is a sharp, clever detective — she almost seems like a young Veronica Mars. Kids 8 to 13 will love the movie. The DVD has just one featurette, a gag reel and a music video, so wait to buy a later release that has more stuff. Price: $28.98. Rent or buy: Rent.
BEE MOVIE
Jerry Seinfeld hops on board the CGI animation bandwagon in this movie in which he voices the character of a bee that tries to make it in the human world. He gets attached to a New York City florist (voice of Renee Zellweger), then sues all of humanity for exploiting the bee population. It's a stretch, even for an animated film, and plays like it on screen. The DVD has audio commentary from Seinfeld, promotional material, trailers and an alternate ending. “Bee Movie” initially was to be offered in HD DVD, but there are rumors it may be canceled. Price: $29.98. Rent or buy: Rent.
HITMAN TWO-DISC SPECIAL EDITION
What’s this — a big-budget movie based on a video game that doesn't suck? It's surprisingly true. “Hitman,” while being true to the game on which it’s based, is an action-filled, fun, slick flick that will leave you asking why so many other video game movies are so bad. The two-disc special-edition DVD includes four deleted scenes, an alternate ending, four long featurettes examining the weapons used in the film, the CGI, behind-the-scenes and the score. Price: $34.98 to $39.98. Rent or buy: Rent.
TIN MAN — TWO-DISC COLLECTOR’S EDITION
Speaking of getting to DVD quickly, “Tin Man” just appeared on the Sci Fi Channel last month. This modern, science-fiction update of L. Frank Baum’s “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” has all the classic characters and settings you know — but they’re tweaked to a point that you’d never recognize them if the names weren’t the same. It isn’t bad, but not good enough to be part of your collection. Price: $24.95. Rent or buy: Rent.
Other DVDs coming out Tuesday: “Fantastic Four: World’s Greatest Heroes Volume 3”; “Bachelor Party 2: The Last Temptation”; “Tom and Jerry Tales — Volume 4”; “Stargate — The Ark of Truth”; “The Secret Things of God”; “My Boys: The Complete First Season”; “Outpost”; “Gattaca”; “Sleuth”; “Sands of Oblivion”; “Wrestlemaniac”; and “Dan in Real Life.”
