Anne Arundel County (Map, News) - Tyler Hibbs, The Examiner’s 2007 Baseball Player of the Year, had his scholarship from Florida State rescinded a day after the Arundel senior’s arrest on drug charges became public.
Hibbs, a shortstop and pitcher, was charged with one count of possession of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute and two counts of possession of drug-related paraphernalia following a traffic stop in Odenton.
“Based on the police report and related information available to me at the present time, we are rescinding our baseball scholarship offer to Tyler Hibbs,” Florida State baseball coach Mike Martin said in a statement. “If the situation changes, we will revisit the scholarship offer in the future.”
Hibbs was clocked going 68 in a 45 miles per hour zone about 9:45 p.m. on Feb. 26, according to Anne Arundel County police spokesman Sgt. John Gilmer. After approaching the vehicle, a county police officer smelled a strong odor and ordered Hibbs and his three passengers out of the vehicle, Gilmer said. The officer found a large plastic bag, which contained eight smaller plastic bags, each of which contained marijuana. Also found in the car was a digital scale, Gilmer said.
Repeated calls to Hibbs’ home were not answered. Hibbs was released on his own recognizance.
Hibbs went 6-2 with a 0.98 ERA with 86 strikeouts in 57 innings last season. He batted .584 with 14 extra-base hits and drove-in 20 runs. He also has played on the U.S. Junior National Team the last two seasons.
Arundel coach Bernie Walter declined to comment on Hibbs or his status with the baseball team.
Anne Arundel County schools spokesman Bob Mosier said there are no county rules prohibiting Hibbs from playing high school baseball this spring because the allegations against him happened off school grounds and didn’t happen during the baseball season.
Orioles scout Dean Albany knows Hibbs well. Albany coached Hibbs on his Oriolelanders fall baseball team and was surprised to hear about the allegations against Hibbs.
“Tyler is a great kid and as competitive as anyone I’ve known,” Albany said. “I couldn’t believe it when I heard what happened. Right now, baseball has to be secondary in his life. I just hope he gets the help he needs and is able to get his life back on track. What happened doesn’t mean he’s a bad kid. It just means he made a terrible decision.”

Every teenager who plays sports should read this article. Tyler had made a bad decision (probobaly from peer presure) and ruined his scholarship and present baseball career. This is a good lesson for teenagers to read. You have to make good decisions in life before you worry about your athletic life

The State of Florida is not saying he cannot play there, just that he cannot attend college for free!

All the parents in Anne Arundel County need to start a campaign to not allow this "student athlete" to compete this season. Drug dealing is a serious offense and this sets a very bad example to all students in the county and state. At least Florida State is doing the right thing, hopefully the Anne Arundel school district will too.

I would be amazed if that school did the right thing and set a example. The AD and assistant AD has always said win at all cost.

Thank God we were all not judged as harshly and publicly for our errors in judgment at 18 years old as this boy has been. Innocent until proven guilty, he was not the only one in the car that night, maybe its just a flaw in human nature to want to see those at the top, fall. Judgement should be reserved for the legal system after a fair investigation, wouldnt you want the same if it were your son?

I wonder if Tyler was a substitute on the Arundel HS team if Coach would not have immediately suspended him from the team. Regardless, Tyler should not be allowed to play and quite frankly, the parents should prohibit him from playing as punishment.

Wonder if this kid has done this kind of thing before or does he have a juvenile record of dealing drugs. Anyway you look at it he is a drug dealer and shouldnt be allowed to represent any team. What kind of message is the coach and principle sending to the other kids put in their care by allowing him to practice. This is as bad professional sports where anything goes. Shame,Shame,Shame on Arundel High School.

All of you are lucky tyler didnt throw a baseball at you.Tyler hibbs is not a threat to socitey what so ever and has learned from his mistake.Everyone makes bad decisions but this was a costly decision and may change his whole future. This kid is upset about all that has gone on and everyone is not making the situation any better.Baseball is tylers life and taking that away gives this kid nothing to live for. Tyler should be allowed to play his senior season and graduate.

The young man got caught with a large sum of money, a scale and large amount of dope. If that had happen in baltimore he would be a drug dealer. He made a very bad choice and now the people in authority need to do what is right, so that other young people will get the messege that its not acceptable anywhere.

Please! The comments are typical for a teen not from Baltimore City. Any one with a large plastic bag did not make a terrible decision. Call it what it is a - "a criminal act" and the teen was arrested. I am tired of the song a dances for teen from neighborhoods other than Baltimore City getting a slap on the hand. This teen needs to be charged and tried for his criminal act(s) and if found guilty pay the consequences for his actions.

The Anne Arundel County School Board needs to take appropriate action and not allow this student be eligible to play in the upcoming baseball season. If they allow this to happen, it would be sending a terrible message to the other players and students.
