This year’s 24th annual American Heart Association’s Heart of Baltimore Gala, which was held recently at the Hyatt Regency in Baltimore, was the best ever, thanks to the many supporters who donned their finest red garb to raise money for this wonderful organization.

Event chair Aris Melissaratos, whose day job is special assistant to Johns Hopkins University President William Brody, pulled out all the stops with such heart-warming guests as former Homeland Security chief Tom Ridge, lawyer Julie Landau, Baltimore Business Journal’s Heather Harlan, Drs. Roger and Wendy Blumenthal, William and Catherine Corey, Sharon Akers of the Edward A. St. John Foundation, Inc., lawyer Rich Davis, and master of ceremonies — and voice of the Orioles — Fred Manfra.

Socially Speaking had a special meeting with heart transplant recipient Claudia Langley and her husband, Alan. “I had accepted the fact that I was going to die,” Claudia said. “I cried when I received the call that my sick worn-out heart would be replaced.”

“That’s why we are all here,” said Melissaratos. “So many happy stories, like Claudia’s, continue, and that’s why we are making progress against America’s No. 1 killer — coronary heart disease.”
