Sacred Heart in control against Enterprise

REDDING (Map, News) - Jerry Brown scored 20 points and Sacred Heart used a big third quarter to knock off fourth-seeded Enterprise 66-57 Tuesday in a NorCal Division III quarterfinal boys’ basketball game.

The Irish (20-12) advance to Thursday’s semifinal at El Camino of Sacramento, which eliminated Mission 69-65.

Leading 33-25 at halftime, the Irish outscored the Hornets (20-12) 19-12 in the third quarter to take control. Sacred Heart led by as many as 18 points in the fourth before Hornets sharpshooter Jacob Gray hit three 3-pointers to make it close at the end. Gray was limited to nine points in the first three quarters, but finished with 16.

Kevin Greene added 14 points and Teandre Hubbard 11 for Sacred Heart.

Riordan 72, Dublin 43

Jorge Camacho had 15 points and eight rebounds and Daniel Cannon added 14 and 10 assists as the host second-seeded Crusaders (21-10) cruised past the Gaels (23-8) in a Division III quarterfinal.

Riordan led 18-3 after the first quarter and will now host Sacramento in a semifinal game Thursday at 7 p.m.

The two teams have met in the quarterfinals in each of the last two years, with the Dragons winning 58-52 at home last season and 54-44 at Riordan in 2006.

Cannon’s 10 assists give him 302 for his career, and he became the fourth Riordan player to eclipse 300 in his career.

Lick-Wilmerding 58, Sacred Heart Prep 50

ATHERTON — With his team up by five points and 19 seconds left in the game, Lick-Wilmerding star guard Marcus Wells needed two free throws to seal the win.

Continuing to struggle from the line, Wells made just the third of his eight foul shots in the fourth quarter and kept third-seeded Sacred Heart Prep in the game.

But the senior stole the ball in the backcourt and made an easy layup to pull off the upset in the Division V game.

“I felt like I needed to carry my team on my back in the fourth quarter,” Wells said. “I needed to take over and create in a close game.”

The Tigers (25-8) advance to Thursday’s semifinal game at second-seeded Liberty Christian of Redding (25-6), which beat Brookside Christian of Stockton 75-60.

For one quarter, the Tigers proved the team is not just Wells and everybody else.

The senior scored only four points in the third quarter, but Lick-Wilmerding outscored the Gators (19-9) 14-7 in the period, recording four assists on six baskets to take a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter.

“This is our ninth game in the playoffs,” Tigers coach Elliott Scott said. “It’s important for these guys to have the memory and know they are part of it. They really understand how to help their buddies out. It’s the love of the teammates.”

Wells was more aggressive in the final stanza. His penetration resulted in four fouls and nine points for the senior. He finished with team-high 24 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

HAYWARD — Playing a night after a thrilling overtime victory, the Mustangs (25-11) saw their season come to an end at the hands of the top-seeded and unbeaten Warriors (29-0).

Sacred Heart Cathedral 74, Oroville 34

Rayven Brooks came off the bench to score 14 points as the top-seeded Irish (30-0) rolled past the Tigers (15-14).

Sacred Heart, ranked No. 1 in the nation by USA Today, advances to Thursday’s semifinal at home against Sacramento, a team the Irish beat last year in the NorCal final en route to their second straight state championship.

Ashley Boggs and Tierra Rogers each scored 12 points for Sacred Heart.

Miramonte 70, St. Ignatius 54

ORINDA — A cold-shooting first half was too much to overcome as the Wildcats (19-12) fell to the third-seeded Mustangs (27-3).

Miramonte advances to face St. Mary’s of Stockton on Thursday.

Stephanie Golden (21 points) was too much to handle in the paint for SI, which shot just 24 points from the field in the first half en route to 19 points.

But high-energy, pressure defense brought the Wildcats back into it, trimming Miramonte’s advantage to 39-34 midway through the third quarter.

Miramonte ended the Wildcats season for the second season in a row with a 14-3 run to end the third and start the fourth pushing the lead back up to 18 with 5 minutes left in the game. “They’ve always battled,” a worn-out SI coach Mike Mulkerrins said of his team’s second-half play. “I told them at the half that it didn’t matter if we lost by two or 20 and they responded, but we spent so much energy catching up it was tough.”
