School reopens after construction stirs up asbestos

BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Homestead-Wakefield Elementary School in Bel Air reopened Thursday after workers finished cleaning up asbestos disturbed by construction.

Officials said they were taking precautions to prevent a recurrence.

The school closed Wednesday after construction crews installing an air-conditioning system disturbed asbestos fibers that had flaked off old beams and collected inside ceiling tiles removed Monday night, spokesman Don Morrison said.

Testing during the school day Tuesday found airborne asbestos fibers, triggering the closure of the school for cleanup by an industrial decontamination crew.

Exposure was not enough to pose health risks, Morrison said.

To prevent more asbestos from getting into the air, the rest of the ceiling tiles in the entry area and main hallway have been removed, and plastic sheeting has been spread beneath the beams, Morrison said.
