Kevin Klink, 19, of Columbia, a former Oakland Mills wrestling champion, is scheduled to be sentenced this morning for killing Mount Hebron student Robert Brazell, 17, with a blow to the head with an aluminum baseball bat.
“That fight is part of the reason we now have a partner system when we go to basketball games,” said Pat Davis, 15, a sophomore Hammond basketball player who joined friends at the nearby McDonald’s restaurant Monday after school.
“We have to watch each other so no one gets jumped in a bathroom or something.”
Davis said the rivalry intensified after the late-night melee among two dozen students Feb. 24, 2007, on Mount Hebron’s football field.
And when students gathered at that same football field for a junior varsity game this year, “there were a lot of dirty looks,” said Eric Cox, 14, a freshman Hammond football player who has only heard stories about the legendary fight.
Hammond Principal Sterlind Burke did not return calls for comment, but school system spokeswoman Patti Caplan said she was not made aware of any policy changes, including the partner system, since the incident.
“This was a very isolated incident that just happened to take place on school property and had nothing to do with a school event,” Caplan said.
“We’re fortunate enough to have school resource officers who do a very good job managing things that happen in the community that might spill over into the school system.”
Klink, who claims he was acting in defense of a friend being pummeled by Brazell, pleaded guilty in January to voluntary manslaughter and a dangerous weapon charge.
“In a situation like that, you only have a second to react,” said Allen Coleman, 16, a Hammond basketball player who says he’s been in several fights.
“You’re going to swing where you know it will take somebody out.”
Coleman said a life sentence was harsh for someone so young, but 10 years for manslaughter “doesn’t seem like it’s enough.”
According to a binding plea agreement, Howard Circuit Judge Lenore Gelfman will sentence Klink to 10 years in prison for manslaughter and three for the dangerous weapon charge. Klink was originally charged with first-degree murder carrying a maximum sentence of life in prison.
Mount Hebron Principal David Brown said the school did not recognize the one-year anniversary of Brazell’s death this month.

I still dont think Klink got enough years for what he did! No matter what Robby was doing to Klinks friend, a bat shouldn't have gotten involved, at least be MAN ENOUGH and use your hands, no weapons!! did robby have a weapon?! so irest my case, Klink did wrong, not robby. Klink is only going to serve HALF of 13 yrs anyways if he's good in prison. so he definately deserves more than 13 years. thanks =)

David Brown needs to be removed as principle, he has done NOTHING good for the school, and not holding just a rememberance for a student that was murdered from his school is a ridiculus.

To Hebron Grad, Teacher, and Coach: Thank you, you said it well. To the Examiner: I am also a Hebron grad and a parent of an athlete at Mount Hebron. I don't know of any "bad blood" between Hammond and Hebron -- stop trying to create a situation where there isn't one. To poster 8:17: It sounds like you learned alot and grew up alot from this incident. Share this with your peers and younger friends, maybe other kids can learn something as well.

I will say that i dont believe anymore blood needs shed over this incident and i do believe that Mt Hebron and Hammond studens just want to continue on with their life. Both of our sides lost a good friend. I didnt know Robert Brazell but from the sound of it he was a good kid. I know Klink personally and i know in his heart he was doing what he thought was right. I was one of the hammond kids at the fight and its affected my life in ways unimaginable. You just don't realize how precious life is until something bad like that happens. My thoughts and prayers go out to Klink and his family and to Robert and his family. Think before you act. Stupid ass fights like this aren't worth it and i will say that this incident could have been advoided if all of us would have used our heads in the first place and not went to the fight. Cheerish life.

Kids have to understand that when they put themselves or find themselves in this situation that this can happen. You never know who has a gun.

Hey, 8:20....How many times are you going to post? How many names are you going to use? Perhaps if more parents had their heads outta their backside, we could have avoided the Bob Brazell tragedy.

"Facts it is." Huh? I don't know any Mt. Hebron students who see Hammond as a "rival" in any way. I don't see any real "bad blood" either. The two schools are far apart in the county and have no overlap between feeder schools, neighborhoods, etc. Mt. Hebron and Centennial have always been rivals but never Hammond. Also, keep in mind that you are talking about troubled kids on the margins of each school agreeing to meet for a prearranged fight. Not a great choice. Troubled kids will always find a reason to have "bad blood" between various groups. It's a lame attempt to justify their behavior.

What a sensationalist piece of garbage this "article" is. You should be ashamed for trying to promote "bad blood" between schools. I have children at one of the schools mentioned and have never heard my children or their friends so much as mention the other school in a negative light. If you can't be positive, why don't you concentrate your efforts on something more realistic and factually based????

I bet the Examiner reporter went to the local McDonalds to get inside scoop on the Turbercolis situation and asked a couple of kids about the fight since there was no sensationalism to be found in the medical. With encouragement the kids said something and thus an article is born. Must be a slow sensationalism day.

This is the most irresponsible, pointless and tasteless article I have seen in some time. For once in my life, I have to agree with school system spokeswoman Patti Caplan when she says, "This was a very isolated incident that just happened to take place on school property and had nothing to do with a school event." It is truly unfortunate this event took place at all and saddening that it took place at a high school known for excellence in academics, class people and athletics. As far as the "buddy system" goes, teammates look out for each other when the team is on the road. Always have always will. And to glorify and call a fight where a young man lost his life and another young man is going to prison for his actions, "legendary" is disgusting. Its a good thing you mentioned how young Mr. Coleman has been in several fights and how it his mantra to, “...swing where you know it will take somebody out.” What a perfect way to reward this kid for all the wrong reasons. What a joke

This article is absolutely ridiculous based on the hear-say of a few students at Hammond. There is no "rivalry" between the schools, unless you are trying to instigate one. How can your editors allow this trash to go to print?

Allen Coleman seems like a young man headed for trouble with his comments about "taking someone out." I hope his parents read the article and talk to him about some common sense and masculinity.
