Jones, Hwee spark Washington

SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Tierney Jones scored 18 of her 26 points in the second half as host Washington beat International Studies Academy 60-52 Friday in the San Francisco Section girls’ basketball quarterfinals.

The Eagles (16-11) advance to Tuesday’s semifinals at Kezar Pavilion against Lowell.

Rachelle Hwee had 14 points and 11 assists for Washington. Jones also had 12 rebounds.

Brittney Allen led ISA with 25 points. The Cobras finished 15-13.

Lowell 68, Marshall 17

Anna Bukareva scored 18 to lead the Cardinals (24-4) past the Phoenix (1-16). Bukareva had 12 in the first half, when Lowell sprung out to a 35-4 lead.

“[The Phoenix] are kind of inexperienced,” Lowell coach Aki Kuwada said. “Our defense is a lot better than our offense and once we get that going it’s hard for even an experienced team to score.”

Marshall managed to unleash a brief flurry of points in the third quarter, starting with 5:45 left when Nunu Colbert made an eight-footer.

The Phoenix, which dressed only six players for the contest, scored 12 in that quarter, but still lost ground to Lowell.

Marshall again failed to hit a field goal in the fourth quarter, eventually scoring again on a Colbert free throw with less than a minute left.

Lincoln 68, Galileo 48

Hallie Meneses hit five 3-pointers in the first half and Lincoln (20-10) cruised to a 68-48 victory Friday night.

“We’re getting used to each other and what each of us do best,” Meneses said after she had poured in 23 points, most of which came on her barrage of long distance shots.

Lincoln hounded the Lions (11-16) with full-court pressure defense and pushed ahead on every offensive opportunity to close the first quarter on a 19-5 run on their way to a fairly easy victory.

Wallenberg 47, Balboa 17

Shawnte Taylor had 25 points and 10 rebounds as the fourth-seeded Bulldogs (11-11) eased past the seventh-seeded Buccaneers (1-20) at Kezar Pavilion.

“Shawnte is extremely important to us,” Wallenberg coach Alan Tong said of his 5-foot-11 junior center. “The problem is, the rest of the team kind of depends on her. Sometimes I feel I should take her out to see how the others can play without her.”

The Bulldogs, playing in their first postseason in five years, were rampant in the first three quarters, outscoring the Buccaneers 40-9 while limiting their opponents to just two buckets from the field. The Bucs had their best period in the fourth when Hitomi Silver and Wendy La hit back-to-back treys.

“In the playoffs, you really need to step up and play, and we didn’t really do that until the second half,” Wallenberg coach Alan Tong said. “I think — I know — we can play a lot better.”
