The Maryland State Highway Administration says salt spreaders have been out all night, across the state, to prevent a wintry mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain from freezing on the roads.
Spokeswoman Sandra Dobson says the agency is using nearly 1,900 pieces of equipment, close to the full contingent of machinery.
Dobson says there is no specific region of concern. Although different forms of precipitation are falling across the state, temperatures are staying around freezing and whatever is falling is threatening to freeze on the roads.
Shortly before 6:30 a.m., she reported the morning rush hour appeared to be going smoothly on state highways, with no major accidents.
Weather forecasters say the first wave of winter weather is moving out of the region, but more ice, freezing rain and snow are moving into the region. Utility giant BGE is preparing for ice to form on tree limbs and power lines, which could bring them crashing to the ground.
Schools, colleges and universities are either closing for the day or delaying opening.
