As a condition of his plea, Longerbeam, of Gwynn Oak, Md., is required to resign from the D.C. police department and register as a sexual offender.
“This case tragically illustrates that child predators come from all walks of life, even those sworn to uphold the law,” U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Taylor said.
At Wednesday’s hearing, Longerbeam admitted that on Dec. 18, he went to a friend’s house to have sex with a teenage boy. The friend was cooperating with authorities.
Longerbeam was beginning his late-night shift when he received a text message from the cooperating witness who told the officer that he had a boy coming over to have sex, documents said.
Longerbeam asked how old the child was and whether the boy was “into 3 ways,” according to court documents. When the friend replied in the affirmative, Longerbeam responded, “Kool, when can join?”
When Longerbeam showed up at the home early that morning, he was arrested. Police found lubricant and a laptop computer, court documents said.
He was still wearing his D.C. police uniform, law enforcement sources told The Examiner at the time of his apprehension.
D.C. Police Chief Cathy Lanier said any actions that betray the trust of the community would not be tolerated.
“Longerbeam’s actions are contrary to everything the department stands for,” she said in a statement.
The federal sting was similar to one that netted a senator’s aide in November.
Last week, James Michael McHaney, a 28-year-old aide to Sen. Maria Cantwell, D-Wash., pleaded guilty to charges of possession of child pornography. McHaney faces eight to 10 years in prison.

Wow, someone really doesn't like the question being turned back around. When I read the article the first time, I didn't catch that it was a boy until the end. I thought it was the cop, a friend and a girl. I distaste pedophilia, but my question still remains, Joe, would you have written "Who else prays upon teenage girls if not straight men?" I think that if you had written your 1st piece "neutrally" none of this would have happened. I agree, he should hang, there shouldn't be a "lessened" sentencing, but unfortuneately our laws allow for it, so that's where we're left. When you break the law, you should pay, but don't lump us all together. I guess that's all I'm trying to get at....

How nice that someone was uncomfortable enough w my last comment to report it as inappropriate and had it removed. Of course, and as usual, Mr. Joe can say what he wants, but when somebody repudiates him, it's removed. There is nothing in my past, I'm just asking you the question, & this has nothing to do with violating the law, that of course has to happen, but w homosexuality in general, almost all states have dropped their "Sodomy" laws as unenforcable (thank you Supreme Court & privacy), but what was said is that how would you have liked the article to be a daughter, or mother, or anything...Joe, would you have written "Who else prays on teenage girls if not straight men?" Would you have written that? Be honest.

Everyone has the right to judge those who violate the law. What's your problem with that? Again, you're overreacting. Little problem in your angry gay past?

Lot of rage in that examiner reader post. I didn't say all gay men were pedophiles. You sound angry about something. Story hit to close to home?

Mr Joe.... Maybe you should open your eyes. It's closed minded bigots like you who should realize that pedophilia and homosexuality are not synonomous. Oh, maybe that word's to big for you; they are not one and the same. I am a gay man and I have been with my partner for 11 years and have absolutely no desire to be w/ young boys. Maybe your problem is that it is the seceret desire behind your motivations that make you ask such a stupid question: we all know it's easier to hide something if you protest it the loudest. Sorry, but most instances of child sexual abuse is heterosexual.
