BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Many years ago, a group of guys vowed to one day help kids get what they were fortunate to have — a wonderful education. This year, the gang gathered for its 15th annual and record-setting bull roast at the 4H Building at the Maryland State Fairgrounds. More than 1,900 guests enjoyed the great food provided by Atlantic Caterers, which made G.B. Charities President Bill Callis and event chairman Don Brennan extremely happy. “It just keeps getting bigger and better every year,” Callis said. “You see people you forgot you knew — it’s great.”
Supporters included Craig and Jacque Pfeifer of Maryland Screen Printers; Royal Farm’s John Kemp; the Bozel family of Jeff, Pat, Moe and Chris; and Bob and Shelly Wiglesworth. Presently, 39 kids are being helped through G.B. Charities Inc., which, according to its Web site, is dedicated to improving the Baltimore community through faith-based educational schools.
More than $150,000 was raised. For information on this organization, call Callis at 410-218-3889, or e-mail him at callis@comcast.net.
PSST! YOU HEARD IT HERE FIRST
» That the Ravens’ new head coach, John Harbaugh, was house hunting in the Laurelford community.
» That Ravens assistant coach Cam Cameron was at Loyola Blakefield last week taking a look-see, maybe for his son?
» It was a sports celeb-reality Friday night at the private, VIP grand-opening party for Tark’s Grill at Greenspring Station. Owners Terry Arenson, Bill Shriver, Gary Gill, Scott Steel and Mark Hoffman welcomed some of the Land of Pleasant Living’s finest.
University of Maryland basketball coach Gary Williams was holding court, as folks — including former Terps star Ernie Graham — gave him nonstop congrats on his 600th win. Ravens owner Steve “Mr. B” Bisciotti brought his new big bird — Coach Harbaugh — and the team’s marketing guru, Kevin Brynes. Former Baltimore Colts were aplenty — Dr. Sam Havrilak and his wife, Terry; Tony Linhardt and his wife, Renada; Tom Matte and his wife, Judy; Bruce Laird; and Rick Volk. All were thrilled to see Sandy Unitas arrive with her lovely daughter, Paige.
Gem-of-a-guy Paul Winicki of Radcliffe Jewelers and restaurateur John Liberatore also made appearances to welcome the new kids on the block.
HOW SWEET IT WAS
No doubt the sweetest party in town last week was the Chocolate Affair, which annually raises funds for Healthcare for the Homeless Inc. More than 50 area chocolatiers, restaurants and caterers spoiled the crowd of sweet tooths with everything from chocolate sushi to yummy cocktails. Some of the “sweeties” included Denise Kline and her daughter Kristy and Mayor Sheila Dixon. Yours truly served as a “celebrity” judge — a tough job, but somebody had to do it. More than $140,000 was raised.
