SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - A 9-0 run early in the fourth quarter lifted Riordan to a 61-52 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral in the quarterfinals of the West Catholic Athletic League playoffs. With the win, Riordan (16-9) advances to face top-seeded Mitty in the semifinals, scheduled for Friday at St. Ignatius.
Host Riordan trailed 42-39 at with 6 minutes, 41 seconds remaining when Brian Miguel hit the first of his three fourth quarter 3-pointers, tying the game. One minute later, after a layup and jumper by Jorge Camacho, plus a Sacred Heart illegal substitution technical foul, the Crusaders held a 51-39 lead.
“This is the hardest-working team I’ve ever coached,” Riordan coach Rich Buckner said. “This win is a testament to their fortitude.”
Crusaders center Jorge Camacho led all scorers with 24 points, but it was Miguel’s 11 in the final period that led Riordan’s fourth-quarter surge. For the game, Miguel had 14 points and four 3-pointers.
“[Daniel] Cannon and Camacho run the offense,” said Miguel. “I’m a role player, a shooter.”
“It’s about confidence,” Miguel continued. “You miss one, you’ve got to keep shooting.”
Cannon, who had only three points, dished out 11 assists, while Camacho rounded out his game with 11 rebounds. Jerry Brown had 11 points to lead the Irish (16-11).

But with the game on the line, it was two crisp passes the senior fed to Matt Wittlin that made the difference as the No. 4 Tigers (19-7) knocked off the fifth-seeded Blues (13-13) to advance to the semifinals of the Bay Counties League West tournament.
Urban had cut a double-digit deficit down to 42-37 with less than six minutes to play when Wells found Wittlin for a layup. After a stop, the point guard flipped a pass to Wittlin in the left corner, and the sophomore buried a 3-pointer to put Lick back up by 10 with 3:50 remaining.
The Tigers held on from there, with Urban’s Aaron Chew hitting a 3-pointer at the buzzer to provide the final margin.
Lick now advances to the semifinals and will face top-seeded University Thursday at 5 p.m. at Kezar Pavilion.
“I have a lot of faith in all the guys to step up and make the big shot,” Wells said. “So I have no problem giving it up.”
Anders Eddy had 22 points and nine rebounds to lead Urban.

The senior scored 19 points —including two free throws with five seconds left to put the game on ice — as University (10-16) earned a road win in the first round of the BCL West playoffs. Last season, University carried a 12-13 record into the postseason before reeling off five straight victories, claiming the conference tournament and advancing all the way to the North Coast Section Division V semifinal.
The Red Devils now face top-seeded Urban (17-8) Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at Kezar Pavilion in an interesting semifinal game. University knocked the Blues out of both the BCL and NCS playoffs a year ago, with each win coming by one point.
“It does feel kind of similar,” Furlong said. “We don’t want to give up.”
Cameron Ruby also had 19 for the Red Devils, with nine coming in an 11-2 fourth-quarter run that put the team ahead 46-40 in the final two minutes. Misha Hurd had 18 to lead Lick-Wilmerding (13-13).

I agree with the guy that goes to Mission, Jerry Brown is not that good. He is just really big.Im a junior now and when i graduated from the 8th grade in 2005 SHCP had all the best players from the city going to play basetball there. When i was a freshman there were 3 players playing Varsity, and Junior Varisty had had a starting five of freshman. now there are only 5 players on Varsity? What happend to all the money that was spent on the "rides"? And Deend parker probably does have the most upside from everyone on the list. He just needs to become a better team player

Why is everybody fighting over the whole SHC thing. We all kno that at the end of the day, SHC would get blown away and those athletic scholarships are going to waste! Jorge deserved it,and so did Coach Buck! I'm happy for them, even though I go to Mission. And for everybody who's mad that Jerry brown wasn't the player of the year, you should be happy that he even made the first team because he's not that great. Jorge ate him up in the CCS final. But at the end of the day, GO MISSION!

SHCP is only hurting itself and losing kids to other Catholic schools in San Francisco. Has the negative publicity been worth the wins. And might I add that the winning hasn't come regularly given the dollars spent on buying the so-called talent. They haven't won a thing, NO WCAL, NO CCS or no STATE. Jorge Camacho was CLEARLY the BEST player in the city. He posted more double-doubles than anyone and carried his team to the CCS championship, demolishing SHC by 21 in the finals. Brown looked terrible in that game, as he did in all the games I've watched. I have a son who is an 8th grader and will be attending SI next year. SHC did offer him an "athletic scholarship" disguised as financial aid. I didn't need the money but they offered anyway. SI didn't offer me anything but we decided to send him there. I know of several kids with less than stellar academics receiving "rides" from SHC. It's a reality so let's not pretend it isn't happening. Yes most kids do qualify for aid but if they couldn't cross it over, they wouldn't have gotten a thing. It's working with the girls program but the boys program is in disarray and the alumni are starting to balk at this practice. They couldn't beat Riordan or SI this year regardless of the "rides"....GO WILDCATS!!!!!

Jerry Brown is a decent player, he needs more time to develop. However, he can't handle good defensive pressure, checkout his stats, against Riordan, Cannon at 6'0", frustrated him. There certainly is three 19yr. olds on SHC's Team, these kids know how old they are, and so do their peers who most have know them since kindergarten. Cooper, Green and Hubbard are all 19yrs old, ask Lee, he never denied his son was 19, he did say that he however can prove that at least 2 other kids at SHC is at least the same age as his son. My son graduated from SHC a few years back, yes on a full athletic ride, oh, and I do now, and have always had a nice paying job. I was approached during an AAU game and so was my son regarding the full ride to SHC, the offer was good and I bite.

Some of you have no idea what you are talking about when you talk about SHC. This isn't college there arent free rides, they may get money but you cant get athletic scholarships to play high school sports. Also one of the guys who got kicked out who you are refering to is still playing basketball at a city school over in the sunset district so how can you say half of the kids got kicked out. For third the guys who you say are 19 are not. Greene is actually not old for his class he just looks thirty. Hubbard and Cooper arent even that big if uve seen SHC play and not only that there is an age limit in sports where you cant be over 19 and play so your wrong in that area because of they were that old they would not be eligible

The thing is the best team or most talented team don't always win. If you watch any games in the AAA, Mission never had the most talent but they always played with heart which is why they won the Ship. Look at Lowell, Wallenburg, they had successful seasons in the AAA but talent wise they didn't compare with Marshall or Burton.

Mission clearly showed their skill and talent. It's great for them to represent S.F. at the state level. Thank you Mission for a great season.

Maybe the ref who made the call was a Mission High School graduate!

I agree that it should have been a non-call and this time of the game. Refs should not be able to determine the outcome of a game. If Lowell had to lose, I'm glad it was against Mission because they are a class basketball team. Hopefully, they can get another win over Lincoln. Good luck MISSION!

It's great to hear people complain about the outcome to Lowell's loss. Hopefully, Mission will go all the way. Losing is not the end of the world, hopefully it can give a person some perspective.

I agree with below, that foul should have been a non call. They were letting them play most of the game, Mission had a lot of over the backs on rebounds but no foul called. That call changed the whole complexion of the game. Lowell outplayed Mission the whole game with lesser talent.

Game tied with less than 30-seconds left, Hom picked a dribble and had a clear breakaway layup. The ref called a reaching foul to give the game to Mission. The steal was clean and even if it wasn't, the refs should let the game be played. For the semi-finals of the AAA, I would expect top rate officials - that is not what I saw. The officials clearly favored Mission from the first play of the game -- even chatting it up with some of the players before the game started. Lowell was called for petty fouls if they tried to contest a shot, while the refs looked away at the over the back fouls. It was disappointing to see such an important game determined by poor officiating.

If there are any doubters left, I think the game against St. Elizabeth's proves just how good Marcus Wells is. 37 points and lock down defense, a truly amazing performance! Williams is getting a real quality kid as both a student and an athlete not to mention an outstanding leader.

Wow, what an opportunity to attend Williams. Truly a wonderful school and athletic environment. That Sear's Cup that Standford annually wins, Williams has won it just as many times at the DIII level. For overall college experience, Williams is right up there.

SHC has 3 junior on their BBall Team that is going to be 19yrs. old this year, they'll be grown 20yr old men when they graduate, so quit tryna tear down other programs. SHC has all of those Scholarship athletes, on steroids and can't producem on the court. Cooper, Greene, an Hubbard are grown men, who can legally vote, will be able to legally drink by the time they graduate. Under achievers as a Team.

If he is going to Williams, which I had heard, that is the number one liberal arts college in the country (average SAT at the school is well over 1400), and they have won a Division III national championship which means they are better than a number of low-level Div I teams. Former area stars Brian Baskauskas and Kurt Bennett play for their biggest rival, Amherst, who has also won a national title in Div III. Quality basketball.

Riordan's luck ran out a long time ago. SHC needs to play defense. Mix up the types of defense, not just stick with man-to-man and watch the other team score. Riordan showed how bad they were when Mitty clobbered them. If SHC's coach learns anything, the Irish will clobber them too, as they should.

The uninformed should investigate before making comments. The top 4 BCL-West teams are quite good and Lick's non-league record is impressive as well. They have wins over International, Head Royce, Berean Christian and Terra Nova, Marcus Wells was key in each of those wins. And while one may think he's going to a JC, I know he's headed back East to one of the top colleges in America (and one of the elite d-3 basketball programs).
