Fourteen-year-old Eric Bush is manhandled by Baltimore City Police Officer Salvatore Rivieri apparently for talking back to the officer.
BALTIMORE (Map, News) - Don’t call him “dude.”  A Baltimore City police officer is suspended with pay after a video surfaced Saturday on the Web site YouTube.com, depicting him yelling at, pushing and bullying a skateboarder after the teen allegedly disrespected him.

“The entire video raises some issues of appropriate interaction with a citizen,” said Sterling Clifford, city police spokesman.

Anne Arundel County resident Peggy Miller said she couldn’t believe the way the officer treated her son, Eric Bush, 14, a freshman at Northeast High School.

“To be honest, if that officer did that to me, I would have punched him,” said Miller, who first spoke to The Examiner’s television partner WJZ. “He did that to my son because my son called him dude? It’s ridiculous.”

Officer Salvatore Rivieri, a 17-year veteran of the department, was patrolling the Inner Harbor in mid-July when he came upon some skateboarders and told them skateboarding was not allowed there.

According to the video of the incident recently posted on the Internet, Rivieri took offense after one skateboarder, Bush, called him “dude.”

“Don’t get defensive with me, son, because you’ll spend some time in juvenile,” Rivieri said.

“You give that attitude to your father. If you give it to me, I’ll smack you upside the head. ... Shut your mouth! I’m talking!”

The officer then pushed the 5-foot-7-inch, 125-pound teen to the ground and grabbed his skateboard, shouting: “Sit down! I’m not a dude!”

“Eric was scared because once the cop pushed him down, Eric hit his head on the cement,” Miller said. “All he had to do is say, ‘Guys you can’t skateboard here.’ ”

As the teen continued to mumble something below his breath, Rivieri told him, “You disrespected me, this badge and my department. When I’m talking to you, you shut your mouth, and you listen. Obviously your parents don’t put a foot in your butt quite enough, because you don’t understand the meaning of respect.”

Rivieri then told the teen he needed to learn to speak correctly.

An internal affairs investigation is pending, with investigators planning to interview Bush on Saturday.

I think that this officer Riviere needs a long anger management course before being allowed back on the streets beacuse he handled the situation in completely the wrong manner. How the officer was not susspended with out pay I don't understand. He assulted a minor for "disrespecting" him. If I were this child's father, I would be taking actions against the officer.

This poliece officer has shown the folly of the US system's decision to emply sociopathic dropouts with the worst pay in the nation to poliece their streets. This man is and would be a thug, weather he had a badge or otherwise. If he can be sued, then good, but generally these people get away with it. Imm agine if the kid had fought back, he'd be in Juvie or dead or in hospital by now, it happens all the time; i know i would've fought back, and got myself in trouble. These "dude's" attitude CAUSES crime, forcing otherwise nice people to become belligerent. Officers should OBEY the law as much as enforce it. IT WOULD NOT BE OK, IF HE DID THIS TO AN ADULT, but dointg it to a child is proof he is a small-minded bully and a biggot. Either way, i don't hate him, i think HE needs MENTAL HELP and a CHANGE IN VOCATION, the poliece department should have an INTENAL INQUIRY into the way it hires officers, and disciplins them, and the family should recieve a payout... as would happen in the

I know what I would do if it that were my son. I would explain to him the meaning of respect. Then I would teach that same lesson, in quite a different way to the police officer. My child would be enjoying a free college education for that, simple fact I have a good lawyer and that guy knew he was screwed, listen to his last comment. Just so you all know, that police officer assaulted a minor. Forget everything else. If he didn't like the kids attitude it was well within his rights to cite him and call the parents. He instead decided to violate the law. Now if that were an adult junky or someone who needed it, okay. I knew a drill sergeant who used to do a little constructive personality work on the side, but it wasn't for his own ego. That guy plain assaulted a child. No ifs, no ands, no buts. He is a disgrace to every police officer trying to do their jobs.

People are getting fed up with the bullies who wear badges pushing non policemen around, shooting non threatening suspects here in portland oregon a few times per year ect... When I was a little kid, the patrol cars said "TO PROTECT AND SERVE" right on them. now they just run through town collecting revenue, and bashing anyone who disrespects their godlike presence. I saw a fil on one who actually arrested a fire captian for ignoring his stupid demand to move a fire truck while the fireman was trying to help a crash victim. I think more bad cops should be fired and banned from future policeing jobs including security and jail guarding as well. We just dont need to be protected all that much if this is the cost. Some police officers are just people that used to get picked on in the 8th grade and they vowed that they are going to be the bully from now on. The problem is that they hold a very valueable NON-TANGIBLE gift - and that is the reputation of all of the great police officers that have layed the foundation of trust prior- Some fat slobs abuse the this hard work that many cops worked so hard to attain and all it takes is a video tape to turn back the hands of time. Good job DUDE you really did your fellow police officers a big favour - now people might look at cops and think of this disturbing video. Real nice ! - Trust is earned not shoved down the throats of people. I can't look at a circus clown now without thinking of this video and how a small fatherless kid was manhandled and yelled at and threatned and shoved. P.S. looks like you had a hard time getting the kid to the ground - WOW - The TAXPAYERS of Baltimore should be proud that they have a cop like you. ( NOT )

When a police officer speaks to me - which is never. I will answer yes and no. I am not going to lick his boots and call him sir. However I do respect the cops - never been in trouble - never plan to but I have had instances where I have had cops with an bad attitude - not like this clown but just traffic things. I just go on my merry way. I then write down all of the things that transpired and write a nice long letter to the City Manager of the city where the cop works. To all of you hotheads - NEVER become combative with the police- you will loose - no doubt. Just document it it and file a offical complaint with the city. My letters get addressed. Hopefully the letter of a taxpaying citizen goes into his/her personnel file. Always be observant when you are being questioned. And never fight with the police. _ CANT STRESS THAT ENOUGH - Just write a letter and see where it goes - if it goes in the garbage at least you wrote a letter and it got read by a higher up.

I do not live in Baltimore or even Maryland, and I have never had any kind of problem, personally, with police. Yes, the odd speeding ticket during my long ago youth, and some parking tickets. This officer is a disgrace. To physically assault a very young and very small teenager this way on the basis of being called "dude" is just not acceptable. This officer brings calumny and suspicion on all of his colleagues, including the vast majority who must, at least in private, cringe as they watch one of their own behave in such a completely silly way. While he should not necessarily be fired (too extreme, as the child was not injured) he should probably be suspended without pay for a month or so. I suspect he cannot be demoted.
