SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Historian Dick Boyd, author of “Broadway North Beach, The Golden Years: A Saloon Keeper’s Tales,” is about to tell some wild stories of famous folks from yesteryear in two free San Francisco Museum and Historical Society events.

Boyd will speak today in a panel program also featuring former sex worker Margo St. James, who just may tell “who did what to whom.”

Then, on Saturday, Boyd will lead a 1½ hour walking tour, during which he’ll spotlight the area’s celebrated entertainment scene. Names he’s likely to mention include Barbra Streisand, Phyllis Diller, Bill Cosby, Joan Rivers, Dick Cavett, Mort Sahl, Jonathan Winters, Woody Allen, Count Basie and Carol Doda.

Both programs will discuss North Beach from the 1930s to the 1960s, when Broadway was the center of Bay Area nightlife. Boyd also will explain how the neighborhood changed from a family-friendly area to a place where young people, as he says, “started looking for trouble, topless shows and drugs.”

Today’s talk, which starts at 7:30 p.m., is in the the UCSF Laurel Heights Conference Center Auditorium, 3333 California St. (It will be preceded by a 7 p.m. reception.) Saturday’s walking tour begins at 10 a.m. in front of Enrico’s Cafe, 504 Broadway.
