SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Cultural artifacts from indigenous communities from around the world are on view and for sale at the San Francisco Tribal and Textile Arts Show at Fort Mason. More than 100 top dealers and galleries take part in the three-day event featuring art from Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Central and South America, Morocco, Nigeria, New Guinea, Uzbekistan, Polynesia and the Philippines. A preview gala benefits the de Young Museum's tribal and textile galleries.

The show runs Feb. 8-9 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Feb. 10 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Festival Pavilion; Fort Mason is at Buchanan Street and Marina Boulevard. The preview gala takes place Feb. 7 from 6 to 10 p.m. also at Fort Mason. Tickets are $15 Friday through Sunday and $150 to $175 for Thursday’s gala. In place of the exhibit, the San Francisco Art Institute should post a wall-full of the threatening mail it has received. The animal-killing exhibit sounds inexcusable, but violent threats are also inexcusable, and a display of them may make a similar point about humanity and inhumanity.
