BELMONT (Map, News) - Max Frye had 15 points and a decisive bucket as the Menlo School boys’ basketball team edged Carlmont 40-38 Friday to take sole possession of first place in the Peninsula Athletic League South.
With the win, the Knights improved to 17-6 overall and 7-1 in the PAL South. The Scots dropped to 14-6 and 6-2.
In a physical, back-and-forth contest, Frye sank the go-ahead score with 35.3 seconds left in the game after his team rallied from a game-high five-point deficit midway through the fourth.
“To pull this one out when we didn’t play our best means a lot to us,” Knights coach Kris Weems said. “[The Scots] are a scrappy bunch … it’s hard to prepare for them, but I’m proud of how my guys hung in there.”
The Scots, whose only two league defeats this season have been against Menlo, had a chance to force a fifth period but Dan Figone missed a pair of free-throw attempts as time expired.
“[The Knights] have a lot of experience,” Scots coach Dave Low said.
“We’re young, but we’re right there with them. Most times we play them, it can be anybody’s ballgame, so hopefully we’ll get another shot at them in the playoffs.”
Alex Smith chipped in 12 for the Knights, while Kevin Hindenach led the Scots with eight points and seven rebounds in the low-scoring contest.
Girls
Carlmont 44, Menlo 32
BELMONT — Senior Colleen Garrett paced a balanced effort with eight points as the Scots built a big early lead en route to beating the Knights.
Carlmont blazed a 20-point lead in the first period and kept the cushion for most the game, although the Knights rallied with 16 fourth-quarter points.
“We’re doing OK, but we’ve not played one game to our potential,”
Scots coach Irene Oliveira said. “The girls know what I’m talking about and they all agree we’re not yet there.”
Jackie Shepard paced the Knights with a game-high nine points.

I remember watching Corey play a game against San Francisco state and his daughter sat on the bench, she was possibly two or three years old. I also remember when Corey coached her at the YMCA when she was a 3rd grader. Corey was a very exciting player to watch.
