Carroll County (Map, News) - A Maryland state trooper suffered “massive facial and brain injuries” early today after his cruiser slid in the rain and crashed into a utility pole before coming to rest on the concrete porch of a house in Hampstead.

Police said the single-car crash occurred about 1:30 a.m. as Trooper Kendell L. Clagg, 35, was believed to be responding to a call about a speeding vehicle.

Clagg, is assigned to the Westminster barracks and was traveling on Route 30 when the call about a speeding vehicle was received, police said.

Clagg was flown to the R. Adams Crowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, where his condition was upgraded this afternoon from critical to stable.

I just wanted to leave a comment for all the people who have had their thoughts and prayers with Trooper Clagg and his family. I am happy to say that yesaterday he was able to take 2 steps, say his name "Clagg" and his D.O.B. AND his kids names!!! Although he does think he is at Crroll county hospital and is off a few years on his age(he thinks he is younger) but just like Trooper Clagg's little sister Gracie says: It's good enough for me and who doesn't want to be younger?! God Bless our Maryland State Troopers-God Bless Trooper Clagg!!

It amazes me some of the comments being made by the "Unknowing Public". All of you are quick to judge on something you know KNOWTHING about. Each and everyone of the people making the negative comments would be the first to cry wolf when they need the so called "Cowboys" and EXPECT a quick response no matter how trival the matter may be. Those of you who live in glass houses should not throw stones. It is funny that so many people feel the need to attack a Trooper who was critically injured doing his job to PROTECT EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU! A Trooper/Sheriff/Police Officer takes an oath to Protect and Serve. You know what that means??? It means if necessary to give His/Her LIFE to protect YOU! How many of YOU would take that oath?? Few if any. Why not take the time to think about Tpr. Clagg and his family. And while you are at it think how you would feel if it was your son, daughter, father, mother or relative in Tpr. Claggs bed? Different outlook now I bet.

The people leaving negative comments are nothing but SKUM!!!If Trooper Clagg were on his way to save your life from a burglar, rapist or anything like that would it be okay for "the cowboy" to be speeding? There was NO ice or rain on the street yet. It was an ACCIDENT! Do you think this Trooper with a wife and three children to care for wants to be laying in Shock Trauma?! Get a life and know what happened before you open your mouth!

He was probably the speeder call he was responding to, how fast was he going to have that much of an accident and injuries? was he wearing the seatbelt he was required to be wearing by law.

Workman was too kind. I think the spineless punk with the heartless comments ought to be horse whipped. Probably this was his way of getting even for a speeding ticket. The puke.

Our prayers are with the trooper. What happened to the vehicle that was reported as doing 100mph in Hampstead? I am not sure if a car could negotiate much of rt 30 at 100mph. Was there a chase by another policeman? Or did a citizen report the speeding car? Always seem to be many unanswered questions in these cases. And there is very seldom any follow-up by the papers. The papers print the original story and no more.

I think it is sad that a State Trooper, who has sworn to give his life in the line of duty if necessary, lays in Shock Trauma in really bad shape and the not so informed critics are hiding behind the mask of an anonymous post on the internet, are already trying to discredit the man. I think it is really a tragedy that someone would be willing to post something on a public news site with the posibility of one of this Trooper's family members seeing it. The ice didn't even start forming on the roads in Carroll Co until three hours later. The Trooper didn't hurt anyone but himself. It is believed that he was responding to intercept someone trying to get away from the police in the Westminster area. But, no one will know that until the Trooper is interviewed. He is still too injured to be conscious. SO why don't you hold off on your Anonymous opinions until more information is known. He and his family will be in my prayers.

there was no ice and or rain at the time of the accident despite what was reported. that "cowboy" was trying to prevent the vehicle racing around from perhaps hitting and killing a family...maybe yours. its real easy to call the game from the sideline

dear 1:16 p.m. you are right on the money. after 12 hours of ice warnings for northern carroll county, this cowboy goes racing down rt. 30 looking for a speeder. results: the felony speeder got away, the trooper is in the hospital and his 35 thousand patrol car is a wreck. if the investigation reveals negligence, as soon as he recovers he should be charged.
