Dickey: Moss a team player now that he's gone

Randy Moss has been able to thrive because of a better working environment.

SAN FRANCISCO (Map, News) - Nothing better illustrates the difference between the winning style of the New England Patriots and the dysfunctional style of the Raiders than the turnaround by Randy Moss.

Moss is perhaps the most talent wide receiver ever to play in the NFL, able to outrun the fastest defensive backs or outjump them on high passes.

But he is also a player who often has not had his mind in the game, has short-armed passes and has let relatively minor injuries sideline him. While with the Minnesota Vikings, he admitted that he decided when he would play his best — and often decided it wouldn’t be in the next game.

When the Raiders traded for him in 2005, though he had the type of skills owner Al Davis admired, it was a serious mistake. This is not hindsight. In the first column I wrote on my Web site, Feb. 25, 2005, I wrote that bringing Moss into a volatile mix that already included too many selfish players simply wouldn’t work.

And it didn’t. Moss missed time with injuries and didn’t play particularly well when he was in the game. He seldom talked to the local media, but on his radio show said he wanted out of Oakland and that he didn’t like the coach or the offensive coordinator. His criticism of his coaches was accurate, but his comments undermined the team.

Moss was not going to return to the Raiders, which Davis seems to have forgotten in his zeal to blame coach Lane Kiffin for Moss’ departure. Moss was scheduled to be paid $9.75 million in 2007. The Raiders wouldn’t have paid that, so it was either trade Moss or let him go as a free agent. Only the Green Bay Packers and Patriots showed any interest. When the Packers bowed out, the Patriots got him for a fourth-round pick.

In New England, Moss has once again emerged as a premier receiver, setting a record of 23 touchdown receptions, breaking Jerry Rice’s record of 22, which was set in 12 games in the strike-disrupted 1987 season.

Moss came in to a totally different environment with the Patriots. Though the team has an excellent personnel man in Scott Pioli, it is built around the coach, Bill Belichick. The Raiders, of course, are built around Davis, who believes that coaches are not important; he’s had four in the last five years and apparently would like to make it five in six years.

Belichick is a strategic master, as he showed in the Patriots’ first Super Bowl win, over the St. Louis Rams. Instead of trying to pressure Rams quarterback Kurt Warner, Belichick dropped as many as seven defenders back in pass coverage, completely confusing Warner.

He is like Bill Walsh with his strategic vision and, more important, in building the team concept. Even superstars such as Joe Montana and Rice were not more important than the 49ers as a team, and even Tom Brady isn’t above the Patriots.

That’s why they’re about to make history with a Super Bowl win that will put them at 19-0 for the season. That’s why Moss was able to subordinate his personality and play within the team framework.

And that’s why the Patriots will continue their success after this season. The Raiders? As long as Al Davis is in charge, there will be nothing but more misery.

God, how I get tired of reading stuff like "Davis made an attempt to force Kiffin to resign." I'm not saying this as a fan of Al Davis, mind you, but rather as a fan of critical thinking. Only a handful of people know what really happened last January between Davis and Kiffin -- and, yes, something did go down; I'm not denying that -- and none of them are talking. In other words, everything you read is pure speculation. For all we know, the infamous 'memo' said something along the lines of, "Hey, I'm getting sick of hearing how you might be interested in every college coaching gig that comes open. If you want to coach UCLA or Arkansas so effing bad, fine; go on, git. If not, you and your agent need to do a better job squelching these rumors." Who knows? As far as I'm concerned, however, the scenario I just presented is at least as plausible as the one having Davis send a memo saying, "Dear Lane, Please resign. Love, Al." It's ridiculous. It really is.

Phil in Lafayette said:
Dickey is absolutely correct; Al Davis cannot resist speed and notoriety. Thus, he's selected Heisman Trophy winners whether they were good or bad, and whether he needed their position filled or not. McFadden never won the Heisman, but was a close runner up and he definitely has the speed Davis covets. What he doesn't have is maturity or the weight to play either the offensive or defensive line and those are the spots Davis needs to fill. So, I expect that Al will ignore his needs and go for the flash. This will cause problems up and down the roster as Vargas and the other runners will be fighting for playing time. I suspect that none of the running backs, including McFadden, will be happy.

Here's what Michael Silver of Yahoo Sports wrote today about Al Davis. "So Al Davis, since the start of free agency, has written "guaranteed" checks worth $18.125 million to Tommy Kelly, a defensive tackle who had one sack in '07 before tearing his anterior cruciate ligament midway through the season; $16 million to Gibril Wilson, a serviceable safety from the Giants; and $6 million for Javon Walker, a receiver struggling to regain his form after reconstructive knee surgery. But he won't pay the $1.7 million a source says it would cost to buy out coach Lane Kiffin, instead essentially sacrificing a season in an attempt to win a stare-down? That's some top-notch managerial skill at work."

Perry, you are sooooo right. Why would someone fire Norv Turner to bring in a guy who hadn't coached in over a decade (Art Shell along with Tom Walsh)? Simply because he needed to blame Turner for the teams' bad performance rather than blaming himself for poor drafting and free agent signings. Davis drafted Tuiasosopo in the second round and never gave him a chance and then brought in a washed up Aaron Brooks and gave him the job as starting QB. It was a disaster. And since Davis never admits mistakes, ever, he often continues to play these mistakes in the hope they'll change their errant ways. Note how long Marc Wilson played his ugly brand of QB for us! Truly, Al Davis has lost whatever touch he may once have had and the game has passed him by. He is not capable of managing free agency in the salary cap era, is not capable of relating to today's players, is not current with new offensive or defensive schemes. He still thinks in terms of bump and run and vertical passing game.

As I see it, the reason the Raiders have the worst record in the NFL over the past five seasons is two-fold. First, Al Davis has hired poor coaches. Joe Bugel should say it all. Worse, he fired the few good ones: Norv Turner and Mike Shanahan. Second, he hasn't drafted well since the 1980s. Let's consider his first round draft choices since 1989 and keep in mind that many of them were very high ones. The utter disasters were: Anthony Smith-1990, Todd Marinovich-1991, Patrick Bates-1993, Matt Stincomb-1999, Derrick Gibson-2001, Phillip Buchanon-2002, Tyler Brayton-2003, Robert Gallery-2004. Seabass is a good kicker, but not worth a number 1 pick. JaMarcus is an unknown. That leaves two quality first round picks: Charles Woodson (now gone), and Asomugha. Note how few pro-bowls these first round picks have attended. If Al is such a genius, where's the talent? Heck, the 49ers have won 4 Super Bowls since last we won one and that was the L.A. Raiders not the Oakland Raiders.

We won the division 4 years staright! The tuck rule, Saragusa dislocating Gannons shoulder after the play (w/no flags)excuses excuses I know well we aren't far from AL's good years. WE are in a rut now. And we are still finding out how much the pats *Dynasty* was a fraud. Yep,time to suck it up raider fans. We are rebuilding. But if we were in the NFC WORST It'd take less than a pre-season to go from 2-14 to 8-8 to be the best in the division.

Why do so many Raider Nation people bring up the 49ers when this discussion is totally about Al Davis? Yes, the 49ers have ownership problems too. I'm sure their fans wish John York would sell the team. But, that doesn't mean we should ignore our problems. The fact is, Al Davis is hurting the team. He has hired coaches whom he needs to fire within short periods of time. Is it the coach, or is it him we need to blame? Who cares what the 49ers are doing? Are we supposed to feel better because they are almost as pathetic as we are? I don't think so.

Believe me its better to look at another teams problems than your own. Disect the raiders allll you want. At least our owner cares and tries. If Kiffin is pushd out, we'll watch Lofton (or whoever) coach us to a 5-11 record ( I give whoever 1 extra win due to a easy schedule) and our rally cry next year will cease to be " I'M IN" and will become " wait 'till next year, we'll have a new coach, things will be different" Coaching changes are not a part of Raider history, at least not untill the 5 years. It is normal in professional sports franchises that an owner hires a General Manager who, in turn, hires a Head Coach or Manager. If the team fails to perform, the coach is fired. If a procession of coaches fail to perform, the General Manager is replaced. One would think that after Callahan, Turner, Shell and Kiffin have failed to even approach success on the field, the General Manager would be the next to get the axe. With the Raiders, however, the owner IS the General Manager and therein lies the problem.

no stats on russell, no new news, russell needs a bra. WOW good info doesn't sound bias to me. I am sure the Raiders should have just rolled over and signed Russell to a huge contract before the season started. I remember during a preseason game hearing an interview with a quarterback telling JaMarcus he should holdout and get what he is worth. anyone know the quarterback???? Yep! Alex Smith quarteback of the real doormat team for next season

A Gothic novel should be written about the Raiders: A demented, sick owner spouting phrases like, "Commitment to Excellence" while his team plays the worst brand of football in the league, and "Pride and Poise" amidst front office chaos. Sadly, the only pride evident is the false pride of a flailing owner. The phrase, "Raider Greatness" should make us all laugh if it weren't so sad in light of the teams' wretchd performance on the field and in the front office.

I've had seats since 1969. First in section 216, now, since 1995 in section 211. I can tell you that in our section, and amongst my friends, there's no love for Al Davis. First, we've never forgiven him for leaving Oakland. Second, our seats have gone from 50 yard line to goal line. Third, his football strategy is as outdated as his hair do and wardrobe. It's time for him to relinguish control.
