Van Halen snubbed its former singer in favor of original frontman David Lee Roth for its reunion tour, but that doesn’t mean the veteran rocker and creator of Cabo Wabo tequila isn’t playing music and working. On Wednesday, he helped employees of San Francisco-based Skyy Spirits put together bikes for kids at the Booker T. Washington Center in the Western Addition.

When did you first get interested in donating bikes to kids? I was always into bikes as a kid. I got my first bike, I’d ride it 50 miles into the next town. I know how much it means to a kid, so at my bike shop, the first thing I did was trade-ins. I’d allow people to bring in their piece of crap, I don’t care what it was, we’d give them something for it. Then I’d have my whole staff fix it up, paint it, put new tires on it … then we’d give them to the fire department to pass out to kids for Christmas.

What else are you up to these days? I’m still doing tours with the Waboritos. I love playing music with people in that environment — in Cabo. That’s my retirement. Instead of golfing I go down to Cabo Wabo and jam with various people, you know, whoever’s in town.

Are you paying any attention to the presidential race? No. I know who’s running and I know who’s probably going to win and I don’t really have a favorite. I’m not trying to be politically correct here; I just think it’s got to be the worst bunch of candidates we’ve ever had. But, I say that every year.
