SAN MATEO (Map, News) - When Jay Brousseau realized his kitchen was in flames and the heat was intense enough to melt the paint off the walls, he did what people wouldn’t normally do: He ran back.

Fortunately, Brousseau escaped a second time without a scratch, his beloved 1965 Gibson Les Paul electric guitar tucked under his arms.

But the same cannot be said for Brousseau’s North Humboldt Street apartment, which he and his wife just moved into a month ago.

The apartment caught fire around 10 a.m. Wednesday, and fire officials were able to contain it quickly enough that it didn’t spread to other apartments, said San Mateo Fire Department acting Battalion Chief Jeff Barile. But nearly everything in the Brousseaus’ apartment suffered fire, heat, smoke and chemical damage.

Brousseau and his wife were still in shock as they stood with fire officials outside their apartment Wednesday morning.

“We just bought all this new stuff, we’d just been unpacking,” said Irene Brousseau, still in her scrubs from her job at a Daly City doctor’s office, where she’d gotten the call that her home was on fire.

Barile said officials believe the fire was caused by oil frying on the stove, but Jay Brousseau said he had made breakfast earlier and left the pan in the sink.

He said he’d left the house after breakfast on an errand and only came home again to iron his clothes before work. He was walking out of the bathroom when he heard loud popping noises, “like gunshots,” coming from the kitchen, he said.

He said that when he walked into the kitchen, he saw the kitchen wall was on fire and flames were flying out of the stove vent.

“I tried to put it out with a towel, but the smoke was too much,” he said.

He ran to his neighbors’ doors to evacuate them — but not before running back in to get his beloved guitar.

Standing outside his apartment building with his wife, waiting for Red Cross to arrive, he smiled and shrugged.

“I’ve had it since I was 13,” he said sheepishly.

I would definitely do the same thing. I have a classic Les Paul too, and if that were ever in a house fire, I would go back in to it's rescue without a second thought. I can't live without my guitar.

Good for him, everything turned out fine. As to whether or not this is a '65 LP, I think that's a moot point. What I got out of this story is that he went back to grab something of extreme sentimental value. He makes no mention of the monetary or historical value of the guitar, just that he's had it since he was 13. And yes, it's definitely not a '65 LP

The 'Les Pauls' produced in '61 & '62 were not Les Pauls, per se, but what we now call SGs. In '61 & '62 the SGs were called 'Les Pauls' but were/are not the guitars we call Les Pauls today. Gibson quit calling them 'Les Pauls' when Les Paul himself told Gibson to take his name off of them. The guitar the dude is playing is in fact a Firebrand, itself a pretty rare guitar these days.

correction: Les Pauls were not produced in the years 1963, 64, 65, 66, 67. note: (Erlewine)Bloomfield's '59 sunburst re-popularized the model (not Clapton), so production started up again in 1968.

The guitar in question is an LP Firebrand made by Gibson Circa 1980. My guess is a 13 year old kid or his parents were duped by the seller. But I know how much that 1st guitar means (I have the exact guitar...it was my first) and I'm glad it survived.

I hate to break it to you, but Gibson DID NOT make Les Paul's between the years 1960-1968, so his Les Paul cannot be 'a '65'. You can check with Gibson if you don't believe me, but it's a well-known fact among Gibson affeciandos like myself.

Ok, he saved it but he is lucky that he did not get seriously hurt or die, or even get trapped in the burning house and endanger the fire fighters who were fighting the fire.
