Mudslide forces Devil’s Slide to close in both directions

The portion of state Highway 1 known as Devil’s Slide was closed in 2006 because of a rockslide.
A landslide south of Devil’s Slide closed both directions of state Highway 1 in unincorporated San Mateo County on Friday, according to the California Department of
Transportation.
The slide happened around 3:30 p.m. near Gray Whale Cove, Caltrans spokeswoman Lauren Wonder said. The slide closed the roadway from Pacifica to Montara, she said.
Workers on the Devil’s Slide tunnel project were helping to clear the rocks and mud, Wonder said. Caltrans said the highway had reopened by 9:30 p.m.
Signs were set up along roads to alert drivers of the closure, Wonder said. To navigate around the slide, drivers had to use state highways 92 or 35 to reach Interstate Highway 280.
On April 2, 2006, Devil’s Slide was closed by a rockslide. It reopened on Aug. 4, 2006. The monthslong closure forced Coastside residents to use Highway 92, causing delays during the morning and evening communtes.
In 1995, the roadway was closed for five months after similar slides.
On Sept. 17, Caltrans began digging a tunnel to run under San Pedro Mountain. The 4,200-foot-long tunnel, which is expected to be completed in December 2010, will allow vehicles to bypass Devil’s Slide.
