Small-plane crash in Laurel seriously injures Howard man

LAUREL, Md. (Map, News) - A Howard man was seriously injured when his small, homemade plane crashed off the Baltimore-Washington Parkway in Laurel.
Patrick G. Dean, 42, of Clarksville, was flying solo when the aircraft went down around 4:30 p.m. Saturday in a wooded area near Anne Arundel’s border with Prince George’s.
He sustained serious injuries, officials said.
Dean was apparently having mechanical problems with the plane before it went down, said Sgt. Robert Lachance, of the U.S. Park Police, who handled the initial investigation because the land belongs to the National Park Service.
Dean was taken by helicopter to a hospital. His injuries did not appear to be life-threatening, Lachance said.
Anne Arundel Fire Department Battalion Chief Matthew Tobia said medic units also transported a 62-year-old bystander to Laurel Regional Hospital.
Tobia said it wasn’t clear whether the man was injured as a result of the crash or just had a medical emergency. He was in serious condition.
Hazardous-materials crews were called to the scene to contain fuel that was leaking from the aircraft, which authorities described as homemade or experimental.
The crash temporarily shut down the Baltimore-Washington Parkway southbound at Route 198 and northbound at Route 197.
Calls to Dean’s house were not returned.

They were coming from Arizona and were on the way to Chicago. It was a family who left 1 daughter behind to pick up the pieces of her life, she lost mom,dad,brother and 2 sisters

My grandma is Kathryn Blohm she is in a rehab facilitation being treated for a broken Pelves, Broken ankles, broken ribs, and she is a great amount of pain. She has alreday been through so much and i hope that you will pray for her i belive that she will recover from this freak accident as soon as she can. My grandmother is not the type of person that likes to remain seated so this is going to be hard for her. She will be able to walk again. My grandmother has traveled all over the world, and she has many years left to travel the rest of it. I thank god every ady that he kept my grandma and my uncle from diening. My uncle gary is truly a good person he is a free spirit, and i belive that this little accident will not keep him from flying again, but he still has allot of guilt for what happend even though it was not his falt. His wife also feels guilt, and we now that its not there falt. We all love them and we pray that it wasnt as bad as it could have been. With love, Brandi Blohm
