Arlington (Map, News) - The Arlington Career Center won a grant Friday under a new Virginia program creating the state's first career and technical academies.
Gov. Tim Kaine announced funding for six centers throughout the state to encourage interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Each partnership will receive a $20,00 planning grant, followed by a $100,000 award upon program approval by the Board of Education and the State Council of Higher Education.
The Arlington Career Center will focus on five main areas: automotive, digital media, information technology, emergency medical services and engineering.
Arlington will forge partnerships with area businesses and schools. Arlington Public Schools, Northern Virginia Community College, Virginia Tech, Micron and other institutions are participating.
Programs in Stafford, Newport News, Suffolk, Russell and Halifax also won grants.
The program is funded by the National Governors Association, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and Intel Corp.
