A storm hit the Bay Area on Friday, leaving 123,000 homes on the Peninsula without power.

San Mateo County (Map, News) - Power outages, flooded streets and falling trees disrupted life on the Peninsula when a storm hit Friday, leaving 123,000 homes in the dark. The county’s blackouts accounted for almost half of all outages in the Bay Area, with most concentrated in Half Moon Bay, Pacifica and Millbrae.

Pacific Gas & Electric was working to fix the power, but warned residents to brace for outages that may last through the weekend.

In response to the storm, San Mateo County opened up its emergency operations center to coordinate efforts with PG&E, Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol and local fire, police and public works agencies that spent the day responding to hundreds of calls. The Bay Area chapter of the American Red Cross was working with the Half Moon Bay Fire Department to assist residents without power.

Hours of rain caused major flooding and traffic delays on U.S. Highway 101 onramps in Millbrae and Burlingame, on northbound 101 near South Airport Boulevard and in northern San Mateo. The Department of Motor Vehicles office in San Mateo had to be closed because it lost power and started to get flooded, said San Mateo Fire Department Chief Dan Belville. San Mateo’s police department had to use its emergency power generator when power went out in the morning.

But the county’s biggest problems were caused by winds, said Lt. Randy Randleman, director of emergency services for San Mateo County.

“All of our damage was wind-caused — trees down and power lines after that,” he said.

Several large trees fell down throughout the county, blocking roadways, ripping power lines and damaging houses. In San Mateo, a tree took down a block’s worth of power lines at Ninth and South Delaware streets, according to the San Mateo Fire Department. Caltrans reported that a fallen tree temporarily closed state Route 92 near Route 35. The Pacifica Police Department cleared several large trees that blocked off main throughways in central Pacifica.

High winds also damaged some mobile homes in Half Moon Bay and brought down roof tiles from the Hampton Inn near Daly City City Hall, closing the nearby area, police said.

The storm brought San Francisco Airport to a near halt, causing up to four-hour delays and more than 80 cancellations of every airline, said SFO spokesman Mike McCarron.

Even access to the airport was hindered by the storm after winds felled trees, blocking BART tracks. BART ran buses from its 24th Street-Mission station for passengers headed to SFO, according to a BART

spokesman.

Downed trees on the tracks caused passengers to evacuate two BART trains and close service between the 24th Street-Mission station and Daly City station and stop trains traveling to SFO from north of Daly City, BART spokesman Jim Allison said.

The storm doused the region with several inches of rain, according to a National Weather Service

forecaster.

“This is the monster storm, the second of three,” forecaster Steve Anderson said.

Was the tree in the picture cut down? There is no breakage on the tree and looks like it was taken down by a chain saw.

Let's not forget those of us that were stranded because MTA doesn't have a proper back up plan for light rail interuptions. Dozens of people waited for their chance to crowd onto a shuttle bus, maybe 3 showed up in the hour i waited. When lodging a complaint, the MTA rep. said they do not plan for these things. REALLY? you should always plan for how to get around an interuption in the line. But then again, its the MTA! BTW, what the hell does O'Malley ahve to do with the weather? Everyone seems to be all up in arms about relating him to the storm damage. It's an act of nature, or as some might say, an act of GOD lol. if so, GOD does not seem to be happy with those that are close minded lately.

O'malley, busch, and miller would all be typical weatherman where they could lie to the public.Between the state liars and shelia dixon and her corrupt adminstration it's a race to see who can steal more tax dollars. Dixon's adminstration does a pretty good job of stealing since most of her people are black.Instead of giving a tax break she wants to give raises to her people while other people in the private sector are losing their jobs let's give raises and screw the people in the city. Dixon doesn't care about the city of baltimore, one of the most violent in the country.Just as O'Malley could care less about Maryland, this is not the "FREE STATE" anymore it's should be renamed the expensive state that has the most laws in the nation.

O'Malley would make a better weather man than he is a politician. He could lie about the weather and blame it on Bob Ehrlich and global warming.

Virginia definitely doesn't know how to handle this type of weather, let alone do Virginia drivers know how to drive. Being from Indiana, it cracks me up to see places of business closing down because the weather report says there's a chance of snow. People need to slow down and remember what driver's ed taught them, it'll save lives.

The problem is that Virginia does not know how to handle winter weather. It's not just highways. "It was a perfect storm at a perfect time..."? Gimme a break. Just own up to not having enough DOT trucks, and to not having an efficient plan when snow/ice falls. There certainly are plenty of other states that deal with snow/ice every year, yet they don't seem to have these issues. It's amazing really.
