TOWSON (Map, News) - Police in Baltimore County have arrested a Towson couple and charged them with abuse in the death of their two-year-old son.

According to a police report, Susan Griffin, 37, and John Griffin, 38, both of the 300 block of Old Trail Road, were taken into custody after the child, Andrew, died Wednesday at St. Joseph’s Medical Center, where his father had taken him to the emergency room, according to a police report. The boy would have turned three in February.

Hospital officials reported that upon arrival, the boy — who weighed approximately 14 pounds — was cold to the touch and unresponsive. The report further stated the child had several cuts and bruises about his head and had a blackened right eye with possible hemorrhaging. Other cuts and bruises covered his body.

Upon questioning by police who were summoned to the hospital, John Griffin said he and his wife had administered CPR  for about 20 minutes after noticing Andrew was unconscious.

However, the CPR was unsuccessful and that the couple then delayed bringing the child to the hospital while they discussed caring for their other four children, the father said.

The father also told police that the child’s injuries occurred a few days earlier after falling into the family Christmas tree, as well as several months ago when he and his mother fell as she carried him down the stairs.

The father added that the child’s weight was the result of him not being able to hold down food after suffering a flu-like illness this past summer. According to the police report, the victim’s spine, ribs, and pelvic bones were all clearly defined during an examination at the hospital.

John Griffin said that he child was not taken in for medical care and that the family’s pediatrician wasn’t contacted because of a prior billing issue.

Police said in a statement that due to the complexities of the child’s injuries, a specific cause of death could not be determined until tests could be completed by the medical examiner.

Bail for John Griffin has been set at $1.5 million, while bail for Susan Griffin was set at $1 million. Both remained held at the Baltimore County Detention Center Thursday afternoon.

The couple’s other children, who range in ages from one to 10, have been placed in custody of Child Protective Services.

She had her oldest son while still in high school. The rumor back then was that she tried to trap an old boyfriend. I can't believe this is the same girl!! I hope the older boy is coping after having such a kook for a mom.

She also has an older child, 18 or 19, and I remember there was something shady with the boy's paternity. She obviously has issues. My heart goes out to those children!

There is so much more to be discovered -- this couple had 4 children and one on the way. Two remaining younger kids have developmental problems. They were estranged from the rest of their family and had no cantact with the grandmother for several years. What could they have been telling the older children to explain their treatment of the younger ones? These kids will need tons of therapy, if they have any hope of a normal life. Poor souls. Is there any way we can help?ny way we can help?

Reader at 10:58 What the?? What article did you read. This family lived in a upper middle class nieghborhood it is obvious to everyone but you THEY ARE CHILD ABUSERS. My thoughts and prayers go out to the siblings of this poor tormented little soul for they have to live with this I hope they get the help they need. And the so called parents should spend the rest of their days in the same kind of hell.

To Many kids not enough income and obviously when your convicted of a Felony you NO LONGER QUALIFY for Government assistance. That child should have had MEDICAID then they could have taken him to the Doctor and not had to worry about prior medical bills. But it seems obvious he was also abused proboblly a child with ADD or ADHD (undiagniosed)not as easily controllable as the other children which in turn caused his demise. As a parent weather your single or have a partner you SHOULD always look to your local state government for assistance when you have financial difficulties these parents were old enough to know that I am sure. Also the Salvation Army would have helped Red Cross assist too and ANY LOCAL CHURCH would help too. As a parent you should be willing to do ANYTHING to keep your children FED, EDUCATED, HEALTHY, and give them LOVE you don't NEED much money as long as there is a lot of LOVE.Alot of parents loose sight of this when financial difficulties set in.

There should be no plea negotiations in these two case. This is a vicious murder of a helpless toddler by two despicable people whose sentences should be death by lethal injection. Frankly, they should be beaten to death. Lethal injection is too nice of a death for them.

Better for the boy to have been aborted than face the hell he endured nearly three years. Don't misunderstand: I'm clearly pro-life. The parents should have taken the initiative to do the following: Put Andrew up for adoption the moment the mother knew she was carrying or decide from the onset NO CHILDREN and taken the needs necessary to meet that end. God knows what horrors the three surviving children witnessed. Adding insult to injury: due process. Some slime defense attornequet will put the spin against the boy and declare his death was his own fault! May the Lord wrap Andrew in His tender loving arms.
