Firefighters responded about 2:10 a.m. to a report of a smoky smell about two blocks from the backside of a house on Saint Elmo Way, Talmadge said. Crews searched for 20 minutes without finding the origin of the smell and left the area, Talmadge said. Shortly after leaving, firefighters received another call reporting the smell of smoke, this time one block away from the house on Saint Elmo Way, Talmadge said.
After an extensive search, firefighters saw smoke puffing from the roof line of the two-story house at 160 Saint Elmo Way and were able to confirm a fire at 3:19 a.m., Talmadge said. Crews controlled the fire at 3:56 a.m. and using heat-detecting cameras located a body, according to Talmadge. Fire officials have not determined how the victim died, Talmadge said.
“It’s possible that this particular fire smoldered some time before it actually became visible,” Talmadge said.
The person has not been identified, according to the San Francisco medical examiner’s office.
Two firefighters sustained minor injuries while combating the blaze and were taken to San Francisco General Hospital. The cause of the fire is under investigation and damage estimates have not been made available, Talmadge said.

I am the cousin of the Grandmother and granddaughter killed in their home by fire in E. Baltimore. It not only hurts to know that we will never see them again but it hurts to know that even when we are in our homes we are not safe. I will miss them and the saddest memory that i will carry for ever is that at her dad's funeral she suggested that we all stop meeting at deaths and have happy gatherings more often than we do, and we never did. May God bless her Kids. everyone that knows her know that her family was so important to her. God bless this family.

This morning, May 12,I was watching the morning new and I believe that the house fire, that took the lives of two little girls, on the north side of Indianapolis was on 3650 Hillside Ave, and of which house I lived in as a child in the early 50s and 60s". I was wondering if I could help the family at this unfortunate time in some small way;however, I was unable to contact you by phone. Please let me know. sincerely Mrs Smith

I don't get why people are saying things about the occupany laws. Some of these people were visiting. A 6400 sq ft house is a large home so who cares how many people were there. If it was a 600 sq ft house and had a lot of people in it then maybe you should start saying things about the occ. laws. I feel sorry for everyone that was involved in this fire. My prayers go out to the family.

I dont think you should judge people or how they live. I am the mothers (Jamies) cousin. The grandparents had a daughter Donette that was shot to death in '93 by her husband. The grandparents raised her 4 children, the other two adults that where in the house at the time...not really adults, just barely out of school. Jamie and her three children lived with her parents in an addtion that was built onto the back of the house for her. They are a very large and loving family. I guess if the grandparents had decided not to raise their murded daughters 4 children, there would have been 2 less people in the house at the time of the fire. Would that have made a difference? 3 beautiful gifts from God were taken from them. Something that Jamie will probably never recover from. We are praying Jamie makes a full recovery from the burns she recieved trying to save her children.

How in the world would the occupancy laws have made a difference? Passing more laws in response to tragedies that are ineffective or completely ignored is the hallmark of one party politics in this state. The only thing that can prevent tragedies like this are: affordable housing, better paying jobs, proper education, and functional fire alarms. Baltimore has been waiting for 60 years for the former three things.

If there isn't a law that limits the number of people who can live in a house, there certainly should be. This was simply a tragedy waiting to happen.
