WASHINGTON (Map, News) - Federal immigration officials have nixed an ambitious plan to join together three police forces and a sheriff’s department in a plan to screen illegal immigrants at the Prince William County Adult Detention Center, forcing the applicants to apply again individually.

The decision by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement means the Prince William County Police Department’s plan to create a six-officer criminal illegal alien unit will be judged by itself and not with Manassas City and Manassas Park police and the Prince William Sheriff’s Department.

“We generally agree, the best way to do it is a central agreement, but ICE said they wouldn’t do that,” Prince William Police Chief Charlie Deane said.

However, the county expects its reworked bid to succeed soon and is selecting officers for the program, Deane said Tuesday.

“I am confident that everything looks favorable for us to be approved, but we have not gotten the official word,” Deane said.

The county is in discussions with ICE on how the program will be enforced, when the training can be scheduled and how suspected illegal immigrants would be screened.

ICE does not comment about negotiations with localities, agency spokeswoman Ernestine Fobbs said.

The proposal would establish a new computerized screening center on the eastern end of the county at the Garfield Police Station off U.S. Route 1, Deane said.

The station would include an automated fingerprinting system designed to link quickly with the federal ICE database to look for people who have been previously detained or questioned on immigration offenses, he added.

Immigrant supporters who unsuccessfully sued to stop the plan in October have staunchly criticized the plan as unfair and vowed to bring further challenges when enforcement begins.

Most reasonable citizens are pro-immigration, as long as a few extremely reasonable conditions are met. 1) Don't come here to leech public benefits, 2) learn basic English, at least elementary school level, 3) don't be a criminal, 4) don't drive up the cost of education and other expenses by driving up the birth rate. Those are expectations we have of everyone, nothing racist about that. Most are good about it, but you have these groups with massive senses of entitlement that I just don't understand. They make it worse for everyone.

If the illegals were putting one family per house there would have never been an issue at all. Mexicans Without Borders needs to realize that this isn't Mexico where multiple families in one house is acceptable. Even poorer neighborhoods can look decent if there aren't four and five vehicles stacked up in the yards and the trash was picked up. Instead there is trash everywhere and junkers sitting. This is not just the illegals either, it just seems to be most prominent in these neighborhoods.

Second, it would be interesting to see how crowded the jails have now become. I know the illegals are mostly all Hispanic, but I suspect that if they were of Caucasian desent the tone would not be so harsh as it is here. I read comments here, many of the posters don't like brown people period, legal or illegal. Look at what they say about black people, regardless of the issue.

It's about time to bring our troops back from the Middle East and secure our own borders. I'm tired of dodging illegals here on the streets as well as our neighborhoods where they dump all their garbage on our lawns and overpopulate our country with their constant litters of "children" to make them all legal. Get them out of the U.S. and send them back where they belong! We DO NOT need any of them taking our jobs and polluting our system. They have caused enough damage here and I would like to see our country going back to the way it was 20 years ago. GET THEM OUT AND CLOSE OUR BORDERS!

I'm so very gratified that these smug, arrogant, demanding illegals are being chased out of Oklahoma, and that Border Patrol has reinstituted their "No Tolerance" policy against an area of the Mexico/Texas border, and that the DREAM ACT failed to obtain sufficient votes to advance. Are people in this country so naive as to think that all Hispanic CITIZENS came in through the legal channels? I'm tired of all this feigned indignation. 'Illegals' have been able to adjust their status once they got here for decades and many illegals entered the US while this was still an option. These productive US citizens are working thoughout all industries including the armed services. So let's educate ourselves. Our federal government issues employee identification numbers to them for tax purposes, requires them to register for selective service, state governments will knowingly issues them driver's licenses, they are allowed to own property and are guaranteed certain rights according to the Constitution. Let's have comprehensive immigration reform that enforces the borders, addresses the inconsistencies in our immigration policies, and deals with those people that are here in a way that protects the family unit and doesn't damage the economy.

Illegals cannot defend the breaking of numerous U.S. laws everyday they're here. Sneaking into the U.S., Falsifing documents, stealing or fabricating SS#'s. using multiple identities to get food stamps and other services ment for legal citizens, driving illegally without insurance and many other laws. So they sink to the lowest level by hurling the word "Racist." You can yell racist all you want, it won't work, we know who we are. The legal citizens of this county have the law on their side. We have RIGHT on our side. And now we have the authorities on the side of legal citizens with the County Board passing very tough penalties for those illegals who are caught breaking U.S. laws. Respect our country, respect the legal people of this county. Instead you demand, boycott and insult us with your unmitigated nerve. Americans have welcomed legal immigration, that's been proved for over 200 years. Criminals, one the other hand are not welcome.
