“Tough weekend,” he said. “So tough.”
The Blast entered the weekend as the Major Indoor Soccer League’s only undefeated team. But after losing to Detroit on Friday and California on Saturday, Baltimore (5-2) dropped from first place to third — a half-game behind the league-leading Chicago Storm (5-1) and percentage points behind expansion New Jersey (4-1).
“Obviously, when you lose two games,” Blast coach Danny Kelly said, “it’s not good.”
Baltimore, which was playing on consecutive days for the first time this season, suffered an 11-4 loss in Detroit before falling to California, 12-10, at 1st Mariner Arena.
Against Detroit, the Blast jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the fourth quarter before being shut out for the remainder of the game by the Ignition (4-2).
Against the Cougars, the Blast took over where they had left of in Detroit. The Cougars (4-3) took a 6-0 lead in the second quarter before Carlos Garcia’s goal with 8:22 left in the second ended a 69-minute, 16 second scoreless streak — the Blast’s longest of the season.
Baltimore scored three times in the final 10 minutes to pull within two points twice, but Chris Handsor’s third goal of the game put the Cougars ahead, 12-8. Lucio, who played his first game of the season on Friday, scored to cut California’s lead to 12-10 with 6:46 left to cap the scoring.
“We didn’t play well in both games against two good teams,” said Cabral, who crossed the 800-point plateau with a fourth-quarter goal. “That’s not a help at all.”
Sagu, who allowed nine goals in two games, said his team looked tired on Saturday. The Blast’s flight home landed at 8:15 a.m., and the team had to turn around quickly for a 7:35 p.m. start against California — the first of six times Baltimore will play on consecutive days. The Blast hosts Detroit (4-2) on Saturday.
“There is no excuse,” Baltimore forward David Bascome said. “Every excuse that we make, we’re guilty of something. We’ve got to keep our heads up and move on.”

Can we get a professional sport in the winter?
Nothing worse than a bunch of sissies running around squealing "don't use your hands! don't use your hands!"
