Fire investigators found a body today in the remnants of a boarding house that burned Tuesday night in San Jose’s Japantown neighborhood.

The four-alarm fire was reported around 11:08 p.m. at 580 N. Fifth St. and was controlled by 1:57 a.m., according to San Jose fire.

Eight men were able to escape on their own and another three were rescued by firefighters. The building is a complete loss and a nearby building also suffered about $10,000 in heat damage, according to fire Capt. Craig Schwinge.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No other injuries were reported.
